6 hours late taking birth control?!

bea22, on April 2, 2016 at 7:53 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 53

I normal take my pill around 1 am (I'm bad and stay up late!) but I fell asleep last night and then took it at 7am this morning. I am still on week 1 of this pack.

Do I need a backup method? I feel like I just ruined everything with my forgetfulness because tonight is our wedding night and it will be our first time.

ETA: I'm on Microgetsin (combination pill) and I've only been on it for 3 months.

I'm also worried because I missed a pill completely 2 weeks ago, which early induced my period, which just ended a few days ago. So now I'm really worried I'm not protected.

Everywhere I'm reading says that I'm not protected because it's the first week of the pack...

If you're concerned, call your doctor's office (I know it's Saturday, but most places have morning office hours on Saturday, right?)

You can use a back up form of protection like a condom. I know that's probably not what you envisioned for your day, but it might help with peace of mind.

For what it's worth, I've been on oral contraception for 10 years and am probably at least 12 hours late on taking a pill once or twice a month. And no babies have been conceived.

I honestly think you're fine! But switch the time you take it, because now you have to take it at 1am on your wedding night....

Ps. Having him use a condom isn't the end of the world. If it's his first time, it might actually help him last longer. Make sure you use lube!

You'll be fine. If you're honestly concerned call your doctors office, they should have someone there on a Saturday morning.

    Happy Wedding Day!

I've called Planned Parenthood on a Saturday morning to double check this one before - someone will be there!

My gyn said if you forget to take it within 7 hrs and you'll be fine.

With microgestrin it doesn't have to be the same EXACT time anyways just relative

You'll be fine, whatever you are reading that says your not protected on the first week of your pack just isn't right. That would mean one week a month you are always unprotected. Unless it is referring to the first week of your very first pack, but since you've been on it for 3 months, you're good.

My GYN has always told me that there's a pretty big time window to take it- like 8-10 hours- before it becomes even a little less effective. They advise you to take it at the same time every day so it's scheduled and you don't forget. The info that comes with my BC packet actually says you don't even need backup if you skip a day and need to double up the next.
