$1,000,000 Wedding Liability

Juanita, on December 10, 2011 at 9:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

My venue wants us to have a $1,000,000 Liability which was weird considering my friend got married at the same place and none of her paperwork says that amount. So I ask the venue and they said there trying something new. Does anyone know where I can possibly get this from?

Are yo sure that doesn't mean that all your vendors have to have an insurance policy that covers that amount in liability? At least that was the case with our venue.

I would dig deeper... Why would a venue (which should be insured) require their bride to pay for her own insurance? I would seriously consider another venue if they insist upon it. I have never had a bride that had to provide her own liability insurance.

This makes me think they've lost their's and can't afford it or something so they're passing it along to the bride.

Dig deeper, so you don't spend money you don't have to...

My venue requires wedding insurance as well. I believe for me its because I'm bringing in all of my own vendors etc. I'm not positive but they required it. My venue recommended Wedsafe as well. It was 75 dollars or so. I'm like sure! In case there are any issues with any damage etc I want to be covered!!

Sabrina, I think you're absolutely right too! But hey, I love the venue so I've got to do what they they say.

Since our wedding is planned for Boston in December and the weather is completely unpredictable, my parents insisted on wedding insurance. We got it from this place: http://www.wedsafe.com/

It was fairly inexpensive, but we didn't need liability insurance.

Something doesn't sound right about that. I would call around and try to find more info on the subject.

Some venues require insurance in the event you damage the venue. You're loading in, drop a vase and it chips the marble floor, etc. It's also a good idea if you're providing alcohol to be served - and it's not coming from a place with a liquor license.

Some historic buildings and the like require insurance as well. They're requiring it of their vendors, and in some cases, the people renting the location.

We recommend all our brides take out event insurance. It's not expensive and it protects you. Since Sue and I had to cancel a wedding due to a family illness we actually paid for a wedding that never happened. We learned the hard way how important event insurance can be.

We've talked with the National Association of Special Event Planners in the past and they offer event insurance at competitive rates:

There are a number of other companies to help you find insurance that meets this requirements.

FYI - You may be able to get a temporary rider on your home owner's insurance to meet this requirement pretty inexpensively. We have a local historic building that requires this of the people who rent the venue and it's how a number of our clients have handled this in the past.

Keep in mind, if someone slips or falls during your event, this insurance would protect you as well. I've seen DJ companies sued because someone slipped by the bar in the other room. The sued everyone, and let the courts sort it out. In one case, he spent over $45,000 just getting out of the law suit and proving he had nothing to do with the accident.

Venues normally require both that you carry insurance and that you list them as an 'additional insured'. In all honesty, I wish more venues would require if of their vendors. It would stop the fly by night companies dead in their tracks.

It's usually the vendors, or like us, we would have had to do the same if we had open flames. They can always institute new rules, but it should be under certain conditions.

It is not uncommon for venues to require insurance from the renter; usually, it's signing over your homeowners, which is very reasonable. They will probably require all your vendors to prove insurance and workman's comp too.

Wedding insurance is a great way to spend money; think hurricane Irene.....Katrina....

It is well worth the peace of mind.

Honestly, this is not an odd request. The venue needs to protect itself as well, so they are requiring those who use the space to share in the responsibility. They may also have a provision that your insurance would pay first, should you or one of your guests do any damage, or are injured on their premises.

An Umbrella policy is not very expensive. About $100-150 a year. Well worth it, trust me.

Check with your insurance agent (who writes your homeowners or renters policy.)

I know out here in Cali, every place that I had looked into had required a $1 mil liability insurance policy, which we are able to do through our homeowner's policy. I guess it's a pretty standard policy, but it's a liability insurance and not wedding insurance. These are two totally different things. The OP was asking about a liability insurance NOT wedding insurance.

Some wedding insurance providers offer liability insurance as well as the event insurance - if you're having issues getting liability through your home owners check around.

Kimm P. - Sorry, when the topic of insurance comes up, it reminds me of a wedding we paid for but didn't get to enjoy... Took us years to get back to where we could have our wedding and even then it wasn't what we had planned originally. You're right - they aren't the same and my post on event insurance was likely a little distracting.

My venue requires the same insurance if we want to serve alcohol. The reason they gave me is if somebody leaves their facility drunk and gets in an accident they could be held liable.
