1 keg, 2 keg, 3 keg, floor!

Christi, on March 19, 2014 at 10:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Ok... I am stuck on how many kegs would be good for a wedding with 120 people at the most?!? I am only having beer and wine and a time limit from about 6-6:30 to 8 because it being my wedding day, I want no ones blood or DUI on my hands. Also, what are the most popular beers on tap? I'm thinking bud light and a cheaper one, would you get 2 full sized kegs (500 8 oz beers) and other canned options or 2 pony kegs (250 8 oz beers) and other canned options? As for the wine... I'm not a big wine drinker so what would be the cheapest and best type/color of wine to get? Any suggestions?

People have done cost-benefit analyses and generally you're actually better off buying canned beer instead of a keg because so much gets wasted if it's not properly cooled or if there's any left at the end of the night. Plus with cans you can get a lot more varieties!

For wine, you should get one red and one white. In my experience, the best choices are one cabernet sauvignon (red) and one chardonnay (white) because this covers the best spread of wine drinkers.

I am going to be watching this post becuase I have the same questions! We are going to provide beer, wine, and a signature shot. We have some big drinkers (beer mostly) coming and I just don't know how much beer to buy.... and how much wine will people drink?

As for beer brands: lots of people love either bud light or miller light, so being able to offer both is great. After that it kind of depends on your region for what kind of others you'd like to have. Blue moon is generally a hit, as is Shiner here in Texas. Dos Equis is a crowd favorite too.

Cheaper than bud light? You've got me. Bottles really are easier and probably better cost wise. Dos Equis, Corona, and Blue Moon are good like LillyBride said. It depends on where you are.

In regards to wine, you really should have at least 1 red and 1 white option. Chardonnay is a good white option - Red I would probably do a Cabernet. Best would be 2 white wines, 2 red wines - one sweeter for each of those so like a Riesling and a Chardonnay (White) and then a Cabernet and Merlot or something along those lines.

We like sweeter wines like Riesing, pink moscato, & white zinfandel.

Cheaper than bud light....Keystone Premium and if that's too much you can go Keystone Ice or Keystone Light. Personally, I would serve Miller Lite, but if you're going for cheep Keystone or Natty is right up your ally!

Agreed with LillyBride, cans are generally cheaper than kegs, plus you can take the leftovers home. Bud Light IS the cheap beer, please don't get anything cheaper than that. Offer a good beer like a Samuel Adams or wheat beer (that would be your Blue Moon, Hefeweisen, etc).

For wine, get red and white. Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot are good reds; Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Chardonnay for white. Many brides here like Barefoot brand for an inexpensive option. I honestly wouldn't buy it for myself (it's cheap - you can get it at Walmart or Target) but for a wedding in bulk it should be fine.

As far as how much to get, that depends on your break down of beer and wine drinkers, and non-drinkers. People tend to drink more wine than beer at evening weddings. Here's an article I found but you can google other calculators.

I really appreciate all the comments, we are all from north Ga so beer is like a fine wine to about 90% of our guests, I'll have Jack set back for myself cause let's face it... it's the next best thing to xanax's lol, j/k. So for 120 guests and more than half will drink Beer y'all would still say canned beer no kegs? ...and Yes, I said y'all.

We killed 1.5 kegs with about 30 people drinking beer. Wow, we sound like alcoholics... But we put it on ice first thing in the morning and people drank on it from around 10am until the end of the reception. Cans are usually cheaper, but we got them duty free from a base. Just keep in mind if you get cases, you will need somewhere to store/chill them.

We got about 3 boxes of white wine, 1 box of a blush, and 2 boxes of red. Yep, boxed wine. But I put them in beautiful glass containers with a spout-that made them classy, of course!

We had 2 pony-kegs for around 100 guests as well as red, white, sparkling wine, no hosted hard-A (though I know people brought some to share on their own).

I think we went through most of the kegs but our reception was going for over 6 hours, plus friends/family helping set-up in the afternoon. The sparkling wine was the first one gone, and I've been cooking with red and white wine from the wedding for over a year now!

I was originally going to do a keg but yes cans are cheaper...However you also need to think about the trash that comes from that many beer cans! we only have about 15 beer drinkers so we are good!

You might want to shop around at a liquor store and see what prices they can give you. They also can usually suggest what type of beer and wine if you know what you like or just want to base it on price. We have a fantastic liquor store supplying our alcohol. They work with our caterer so they'll deliver it to the caterer and our caterer will bring it to the venue and we might be able to return what we don't need (unopened cases of course). We have to finalize that detail but that's what they've done before. Not sure if we have meet a minimum purchase or not for that.

I also like sweet wines so we'll probably have moscato in addition to a standard red and white.

We had canned beer. We got 3 different types: a light one, a middle of the road that most people like, and then another one that's a little higher price. We also had 1 type of red and 1 type of white wine. There were also a few bottles of Moscato, but that was mostly for DH and I and those few people who like a sweeter wine. We also supplied some hard liquor too.

My dad was in charge of the liquor ordering since he use to own a bar. He got it through a local liquor store and was able to return anything that wasn't opened. Our venue also let us bring it in the day before the wedding and pick up the leftovers the day after.
