History
Built in 1898 by the bohemian immigrant Wenceslaus S. Broz, the venue was designed by famous architect Cass Gilbert, who is well known for designing the Minnesota state capitol building. Its first role was a hotel, featuring 17 guest rooms, a dining room, a billiard hall, and the latest modern conveniences of the period, including hot and cold running water, bath and toilet facilities, steam heating, and gas lightings. It was considered to be among the finest hotel in the state. The building is most recently known as Schumacher’s, which operated from 1974 until 2005. It was often a destination for those looking to enjoy a four-star European dining experience. Since 2005, the facility has changed owners several times, all being passionately focused on restoring the hotel to its original beauty.
