With 100's of satisfied customers, we can't wait for you to be one of them! Varsity Rock DJ is a wedding music and entertainment business based in Snohomish, Washington. Owner Michael Bates, is a seasoned professional with experience in songwriting, music production, education and DJ performance. After nearly 2 decades in the industry and an incredible team of musicians, we know how to bring a crowd to life with our extensive musical knowledge, friendly demeanor and high energy.


Services Offered

Varsity Rock DJ offers a range of customizable wedding entertainment packages. Couples can have a consultation with Michael before their big day to go through their song preferences and requirements. We can play literally any genre, including but not limited to pop, rock, jazz, club, and electronic. A live music add-on is also available to clients seeking acoustic performances for their celebration. On the wedding day, Varsity Rock DJ will provide all the necessary equipment, including microphones, speakers, and ambient lighting! We can also act as master of ceremonies to coordinate guest introductions and important announcements.

Musical Magic

As you make your decision for entertainment for your wedding or special event, look no further than Varsity Rock DJ. Michael Scott Bates is a talented musician and singer whose musical gifting greatly enhanced my wedding reception at the Silver Cloud Hotel Point Ruston. Michael opened the reception by serenading the Couples’ “First Dance,” and then gave a 1 hour live performance during our dinner hour. Michael performed a wide musical selection ranging from Country, Indie Rock to Reggae. He was very responsive to my texts and emails and always responded in a timely manner. I still have wedding guests telling me how much they enjoyed Michael’s performance and the songs that kept folks returning to the dance floor. I highly recommend Varsity Rock; you WON’T be disappointed!

10/10!! Awesome!

Michael was awesome to work with from the get-go! As a mom of 3 I have trouble making time for phone calls and when planning a wedding, there are LOTS of phone calls. Michael was so flexible and understanding, and his willingness to work around my schedule for consultations and planning was so helpful and made me excited to work with him and his team. Michael gave us a list of moments we needed to pick songs for which really helped us know we weren’t forgetting anything. He assigned us his partner Thomas as our DJ, and he was equally as fun and easygoing to work with leading up to our special day! Thomas did a fantastic job ensuring our special moments went as planned, made all the right announcements on time, and even accommodated our last minute song change (literally gave him the info during cocktail hour!!) for the mother and son dance and still had a smooth flow. Everyone was dancing and having an amazing time and I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

Best DJ Ever

DJ Michael is absolutely on point! We met him at a wedding show last year. After meeting several other DJs and emcees, we came across DJ Michael. He was laid back, kind, knowledgeable, attentive, and intentional. We really appreciated his energy and felt he would be the perfect DJ and host for our big day.

Throughout our planning, DJ Michael was responsive whenever we had questions. His words were always positive and full of excitement.

On our wedding day, DJ Michael worked well with our vendors including our wedding coordinator. He recognized cues and introductions well. He kept the music playing and paid attention to the energy levels in the room. He definitely made it a fun and exciting atmosphere. We appreciated how he stayed present during every wedding event. Our guests recorded videos of our first dance, and in the videos we can see DJ Michael watching just as attentively as the rest of the room!

DJ Michael made our special day better and we would choose him again.

Amazing DJ and person

Micheal listens to your requests, works with your budget, gives you the freedom to pick all the music to letting be a DJ. Getting a feel for the room and people. Taking special requests at the wedding. I would highly recommend Varsity Rock DJ to everyone. Thank you for our day the best!

Brought our vision to life!

So happy to have hired Michael for our wedding! From being very accommodating during the planning process, making things as easy as possible, to playing the perfect songs during each stage of the wedding night, he did an all around incredible job. Michael took a few of our suggestions and brought the vision to life! I had many compliments on both his performance and the DJ portion. If looking for someone who is dedicated to their craft, professional, and accommodating look no further! I will always recommend Michael to family and friends and will without a doubt hire him for any future events.

Great DJ, highly recommend

Five out of five stars, we would recommend Michael to anyone looking for a friendly and professional DJ. He executed our vision well! Our ceremony was outdoors and had a live musician (harpist), Michael did a great job, setting up the audio, even though there was lots of background noise (traffic from a busy road).
Similarly, after we switched locations to the reception space, his music choices and audio setup were great for the ceremony, the music was great for cocktail hour, the dancing went smoothly, thinks it was DJing skill.

Amazing experience

You’ll Want This DJ for Your Event!

Michael was very easy and professional to work with. He started with a simple form that helped get an idea of the type of event we were having (casual reception) then showed up early and had everything setup and ready by the time guests started arriving. At first he started playing dinner ambiance music just to keep things flowing but as the night went on he definitely knew the crowd and played more dance music that kept the party going for six hours! He has a very good ability to read the room, during a video that was playing he could tell that the venue’s audio was soft so he brought a microphone over and put it to the projector so that the sound played over his own amplified system and everyone could then hear it, little things like that made it so valuable to have a professional DJ for our event. Also the uplighting is definitely worth it, the light filled the room.
So glad we had MSB DJ for our event!
