The ranch was first built in the 1930s by Isaiah Leebove. Isaiah was an attorney with ties to the infamous Purple Gang, who settled in Clare, Michigan while fleeing the law in New York. He built his lavish and spacious, stone-pillared home with the intention of impressing a slew of high-profile house guests, including multiple mobsters and oil barons. Leebove was eventually gunned down in the taproom of the Doherty Hotel by business partner and fellow Purple Gang associate, Carl “Jack” Livingston, in 1938. The property sat vacant for several decades following Isaiah‘s murder until Leo and Glenna Beard purchased the land in 1980. The Beards spent three years renovating the ranch in order to make it inhabitable once again.
