Tobacco Ranch was first built in the 1930s by Isaiah Leebove, an attorney with ties to the infamous Purple Gang, who settled in Clare, Michigan while fleeing the law in New York. Leebove built his lavish and spacious, stone-pillared Tobacco Ranch home with the intention of impressing a slew of high-profile house guests, including multiple mobsters and oil barons.
Leebove was eventually gunned down in the tap room of the nearby Doherty Hotel by his business partner and fellow Purple Gang associate, Carl “Jack” Livingston, in 1938. Tobacco Ranch sat vacant for several decades following Leebove’s murder until Leo and Glenna Beard purchased the land in 1980. The Beards spent three years renovating the ranch in order to make it inhabitable once again. While in the construction process, the couple discovered Isaiah Leebove’s undercover escape tunnel between the ranch’s house and lake, which, unfortunately, has since collapsed.
Tobacco Ranch is located one hour away from MBS International Airport, and two hours from Detroit.
