In 1855, the Free State Hotel was erected to welcome settlers from the Boston area whose homes were not yet completed. The hotel was burned to the ground a year later and—in spite of the pro-slavery forces—was rebuilt with an additional floor. Colonel Shalor Eldridge, who rebuilt it, swore to rebuild and add a floor every time it was burnt down. In 1863 it was again destroyed, along with 150 people and the rest of the city. Colonel Eldridge did rebuild, and at this point, gave it his name which remains today. It went through a complete renovation in 1925 and was closed down in 1970 due to the popularity of motels in the city. The building was changed to apartments. In 1985, a developer made it his mission to bring back the hotel and so, nearly 20 years later in 2005, The Eldridge Hotel opened its doors as a popular downtown Kansas hotel.

Wonderful. Working with everybody at The Eldridge, especially Joanna was so easy and fun. She made everything we asked possible and the reception came off wonderfully. Our venue was the Crystal Ballroom and it fit our 84 guest perfectly. If anyone is looking for a historic, beautiful venue with friendly and competent staff I highly recommend the Eldridge. They even gave us a substantial discount on the room rental for off season receptions so keep that in mind.

Everything was perfect. It was all organized so well, and the catering director we worked with thought of all of the things that we didn't! I would recommend them to anyone.
Also, the venue was beautiful. It was The Eldridge Extended, a newly rennovated building a block away from the main hotel. Our honeymoon suite was located right upstairs, and it was amazing.

We stayed here the night of our wedding. It was a very nice room, and the bathroom/shower were huge. It was very clean and the staff was very helpful with checking in around our ceremony time. It was a bit pricey for the size of the room, but that's the only negative.
