Shaare Zion is is the largest synagogue and "mother keniss" of the Sephardic Syrian Community in Brooklyn, NY. It follows the ancient tradition of Halab (Aleppo), Syria, as brought to the American shores in the early 20th century. When the community arrived early in the century they initially settled on the lower east side of Manhattan. As they grew they moved to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn where they established a Talmud Torah and a synagogue called Magen David of Bensonhurst. By the 1950's the community began to move to the Ocean Parkway section of Brooklyn. At that time the flagship synagogue was transferred from Magen David of Bensonhurst to Shaare Zion.

Shaare Zion typically has hundreds of members attending minyanim during the week and on Shabbat/Holidays. It also has dozens of classes on a daily basis and is broken into many programs that fit each age range, different levels of observance and different levels of advanced studies. It is open for services 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In addition, through its congregants, it has raised millions of dollars for various institutions in the community, in Israel and around the world. Every institution is established and gets its initial start in Shaare Zion.

In its over fifty years of existence, the synagogue has hosted over ten thousand occasions including brit milahs, bar mitzvahs, engagements and weddings. It is truly the synagogue that caters to and fits the need of every individual in the community.
