Maggie began at Nagelkirk's in the Spring of 2021, and has become a core staple of our team here. She is always ready to help you, whether you're here to pick out new decor in our home store, or find plants for your garden. She is extremely knowledgable, and is a one of a kind soul you won't find anywhere else. You will see her this summer all over our grounds, smiling and ready to assist you with your next project. Questions about coming onto our team as a seasonal staff member? She's the one to talk to!
Who has great taste? It’s Sam Nagelkirk, of course! If you make a visit to the homestore or greenhouse here at Nagelkirk Gardens, you’ll know what we’re talking about. We hear it all the time from our patrons, and it’s true! From pots to gifts, to garden and home decor, Sam made them all available to you. Sam has many talents, and is especially gifted with an incredible eye for home and garden design.
Sam was born in Cebu, Philippines and came to America when she was two. A Christmas gift to Wisconsin, she arrived on Christmas Eve. At the farm she was raised on, nothing was wasted. What her family didn’t eat went to the dogs, pigs, chickens, or to the garden.
Her love of flowers comes from her Grandfather, of whom she asked endless questions. He answered each with infinite patience, and taught her the practice of organic gardening before the mainstream realized it was even a thing.
It’s been 7 years since Sam and Steve Nagelkirk bought the business from Meister’s. Each day Sam hits the ground running, like the leader she is. After making sure her staff have what they need to be successful, she’s connecting with vendors, solving problems, and assisting customers. She loves to talk design with those who visit Nagelkirk Gardens. A true visionary, her ideas improve the grounds, buildings, and business overall!
When Sam’s not at work, she’s improving her 40 acre plot of land in Eben Junction (with the help of her sweet dog, Jaxon, no doubt). She’s happy when she has a tool in hand - especially her chainsaw which she’s lovingly dubbed “Precious”. And with that much land to manage, her weed whip gets a lot of attention, too.
Meet our one and only Steve! He's the muscle behind the scenes getting everything ready for the weddings. He leads the team in moving around chairs and tables, and helps keeps the gardens green and gorgeous.
He’s also the friendly face behind Landscape Design here at Nagelkirk Gardens, and our trusty Comptroller. Each day of work for Steve is ever-changing, but the challenge of a new day with new demands keeps things exciting.
It’s been 37 years since Steve began his career. Jumping everywhere from garden centers to cemetery plot renovations to new lawn installations to Michigan State horticultural design, and irrigation design as well, Steve’s always been a fierce champion of landscape design of some form or another. It’s only fitting that he’d employ his strengths in Landscape Design at Nagelkirk Gardens.
Born in Holland, Michigan, and raised between Marquette and Zeeland, much of Steve’s life has been spent ruminating on nature and how it rules landscape design. You see, the home and the sight must determine the landscape design. Form always follows function, for a successful space. In other words, if you look and listen to your yard - it will tell you what it needs.
There’s no such thing as a “typical day” at work for Steve - in such a fast-paced field, each day comes with new demands and quick decision making, all of which is highly rewarding. Appropriately, Steve loves implementing growth. Expansion, making new and improving old are all great mile-markers in Steve’s job. When it comes to landscape design, making new and improving old is what he does best.
When he’s not engaged in landscape consultations with clients or keeping things in order at Nagelkirk Gardens, Steve is likely watching college basketball or cooking a favorite meal. He appreciates a good wine about as much as a good lawn. Steve, like many of us, is so ever grateful that he’s able to live such a wonderful life.
