A Legacy of Love, Strength, and Heritage
As I scroll through our wedding photos, my heart is full. There’s something so deeply powerful about seeing our love captured in these frames, especially as two women of color coming together to celebrate not just our love, but our identities, our cultures, and the beautiful history we’re building together.
Every single picture tells a story—not just of the love we share, but of everything we’ve overcome to be here, standing side by side, claiming our space in a world that too often tries to make us feel invisible. These photos? They’re a declaration. A declaration that love is love, and love is for everyone, no matter your race, your gender, your journey. And for us, as two Black women, those photos represent something even deeper—they represent resilience, pride, and the undeniable beauty of our heritage. It’s like our ancestors are right there with us, smiling, cheering us on.
There’s a particular shot of us holding hands before the ceremony, the sunlight hitting our skin just right. I can’t help but smile through my tears every time I see it. It’s more than just a picture. It’s a moment where everything came together—the love, the struggle, the joy of finally being able to live in our truth, unapologetically. I never realized how much strength and beauty would shine through, especially in a world where we’re often told that our love isn’t enough. But there we are—standing tall, loving each other freely. The photographer captured that strength so beautifully. It’s breathtaking.
Our ceremony was steeped in tradition. We honored our roots, from the vibrant colors of our attire to the ancestral music that filled the air. Every small detail was a reflection of who we are—proud Black women, holding tight to the legacy of those who came before us. The photographer did an incredible job of making sure all of this was captured, from the joyous laughter of our families to the way we swayed to the rhythm of our culture. The way the fabric of our dresses moved, the rich colors, the textures—it all told a story of us, of our community, and of our love.
When we exchanged vows, it was so much more than just words. It was a promise, not only to each other, but to the future we’re building together, one where our love is celebrated in its fullest expression. I see that promise in every picture. There’s one where we’re looking at each other, so deeply in tune, and the intensity of that moment still takes my breath away. The rawness, the vulnerability, and the overwhelming love—it’s all there, as if time stood still for just a second, and the world paused so we could savor this moment, this truth.
I’m also so grateful for how Mackenzie captured the love of our family and friends—our people. The photos of our loved ones, so many of whom share the same cultural roots and history, bring me to tears. The joy, the pride, the sense of belonging that filled that room—it’s irreplaceable. The laughter, the joy, the dance circles we had, the cultural rituals we embraced, all of it is woven into these photos. And each one is a testament to how far we’ve come, and to the powerful community that supports us.
When I look at these photos, it’s not just the love of two women I see. It’s the love of two Black women who have fought for their place in this world, who are now building a life together. I see strength. I see a legacy of love that spans generations. I see the beauty of our cultures blending together, and the powerful impact of our love being shared with those who matter most.
Every time I revisit these photos, I see more than just a wedding day—I see a defining moment in our lives, one that will resonate for years to come. I see the joy, the freedom, and the pride we now have in living our love out loud, in full color, and without apology. I see the promise of a future where our love, our joy, and our cultures will continue to thrive. These photos are not just memories. They are a foundation for our future. A legacy that will live on, inspiring us and others to continue breaking barriers and loving fearlessly.
Thank you to everyone who made this day as unforgettable as it was, and to Mackenzie who saw us—truly saw us—and captured our love in the most authentic and powerful way.
