The Community Center is an historic building with a rich history. It was originally designed in the Italian Renaissance style by Bakersfield architect Orville Clark as a funeral home with integrated living quarters. It was built in 1911 for the Payne family business at an initial cost of $30,000. The building is constructed entirely of brick with tapered column piers on each side of the entrance and was designed to resemble an elegant residence with matching parlors, a distinctive tiled lobby and extensive mahogany interior woodwork and trim. A 1948 renovation added additional flooring space and updated interiors.

In 2003 it was both a dream and a goal of the Sustainer Committee to hold a luncheon to help raise funds to begin an fund to help benefit the Community Center. In the spring of 2003 a luncheon was held which raised the initial $5,000.00 that was deposited in the endowment account. The Junior League of Bakersfield Community Center Fund will provide for the perpetual care of the historic facility as it is used for the Junior League of Bakersfield for the betterment of the community.

Beautiful, but very expensive and the kitchen is very small.

I had my wedding in the summer at the Junior League.. I didn't care working with them too much.. I felt like they were trying to get every little penny out of me and I was on a budget!! The wedding was beautiful though. I had it outdoors and the reception in their ballroom.. It was wonderful in that aspect but I was so happy to have my mom there to help me out with all of the detail with them..

This place is definitely a very affordable venue. We had both the wedding and reception there. Dealing with the staff was hard at times. Also having to plan EVERYTHING yourself at this place was definitely a task to be had. Overall the wedding turned out great and I'm glad we chose the Junior League even if at times I wanted to pull my hair out :)

Not amazed

It is no longer what it was a few years ago. The previous gentleman, Don or Deon made that place a great wedding venue, a lot has change now. Attended a wedding recently and it was terrible. I was considering in booking with them but heard some horror stories of JLB cancelling events. I will continue to look somewhere else, stay away until they hire someone who knows what they are doing.
