The husband and wife wedding photography team of Brian and Malia have photographed hundreds of wedding all around the world, for celebrity and not-so-celebrity clients. Big or small, in hometown backyards, island paradises, mountaintops or vineyards in Tuscany... the essence of his work remains the same: put people at ease, understand & capture the story as unobtrusively as possible, and above all, have fun!
National Geographic, VOGUE, Outside Magazine, Patagonia, The New York Times: Brian's 15 years of photojournalistic experiences are impressive. Hundreds of weddings photographed all around the world, for celebrity and not-so-celebrity clients. Big or small, in hometown backyards, island paradises, mountaintops or vineyards in Tuscany... the essence of his work remains the same: put people at ease, understand & capture the story as unobtrusively as possible, and above all, have fun!
After his formal education at Bowdoin College and Brown University, Brian's development began while working with National Geographic photographer Galen Rowell in The Himalayas of Tibet, Nepal and India. The photography techniques developed were simple: be consistently respectful, unobtrusive and friendly while being highly efficient to creatively capture every detail of the story quickly. Brian quietly charmed his way in and out of Chinese jails, through rioting civil servants in Kathmandu and was welcomed to photograph more prohibited elements of real daily life then most ever get access to.
Brian learned there that a quick smile, a respectful nod and an efficient, unobtrusive approach can create incredible photographic opportunities, while also putting people at ease. His work appears in a variety of publications including books by Random House, as well as numerous national and international magazines.
But how and why weddings? At Brian's own Hawaiian beachside wedding to his wife Malia (also a photo nerd: she's the Global Photo Art Director for Athleta), he was amazed by how obtrusive his hired wedding photographer was and thought that there had to be a better way.
A "better way" to Brian meant developing a collaborative approach with his clients, just as he would with any editorial piece. The result is that clients get to know Brian, and Brian gets to understand his client's story well before the wedding day. When clients are truly comfortable knowing that their wedding is in the hands of a professional who understands them and cares deeply about their story... the joy and emotion of the day come shining through. It's Brian's incredible creativity, quick sense of quiet humor and commitment to capturing the real essence of a wedding that make his photographs unique and cherished.
Brian and Malia own and operate The Boathouse Studios as small, sustainably built studios in San Francisco, on the coast of Maine and on the windward side of Oahu in Hawaii. Every year, Brian supports select local and destination weddings worldwide as well as unique engagement and family shoots. When not photographing, Brian is a avid cyclist and a passionate fundraiser for cancer charities. If a camera isn't in his hand, he loves nothing more than quiet days camping out of his Volkswagen Bus with his best friends: his wife Malia and his "kids" Hoku (pup) and Jetsam (kitty).

Brian’s wife and best friend is also an accomplished photographer and acclaimed Art Director. She’s traveled the world as a successful actress, sports model and lived in Japan for years working as a stuntwoman (no, we’re not kidding, she can kick butt if needed).
Hawaiian born and raised, Malia (rhymes w/Maria) keeps the Aloha spirit alive and well no matter the workload or deadline. Malia is also a Bowdoin grad; she has an MBA, spent years as a producer and is currently The Global Art Director of Photography for Athleta (the snazzy yogawear/fitness clothing company). When not with Boathouse Studios, she is off supporting Athleta's photo shoots all around the world.
Malia is smart, sassy, creative and fun. She also serves as our resident linguist (she speaks 3 languages) and like Brian, photographs because she absolutely, positively loves to create. Malia's creativity and energy, along with her incredible experience and thoughtful insights are an amazing addition to everything we do. We think she’s pretty awesome and you will as well!

I really wanted my baby shower to feel intimate. I did not think I even wated a photographer there. I thought about it some more. I did want to capture the friends and generations of loving family to welcome this child into the world. I did want my daughter to see the excitement, joyful anticipation of her arrival. I wanted to remember every moment of each thoughtful gift, person who came to celebrate this new life on earth. I wanted a story of her life to be captured. Brian tells the unique story of each client with care, obsessive detail, clear communication and nails every shot while his presence is of more an anthropologist and not intrusive at all. He is sensitive and warm and made everyone feel proud to have their picture taken without posing or interrupting the magic of the day. Timeless. Priceless. Classic. Superb quality and artistry!Sent on 02/13/2015

Brian captured my story my husbands story all perfectly now was the tricky part how to capture 2 very different families coming together with one common goal our wedding and marriage. We got married in Sun Valley Idaho where both Brian and Malia had travelled and shot before. We did not want a local photographer that would give us cookie cutter photos. We wanted unique memories of our special day with backdrops of he sawtooths nobody has seen before yet someone sweet enough to capture Otis the lab in all his glory as ring bearer!!! Brian scouted locations that were unique but also allowed us to keep a schedule for wedding and not miss all the fun. He truly truly listened to what we wanted and valued. He was everywhere without intrusion and calmed all involved with his warmth and loving experience. Best investment in our wedding hands down . Truly a pro who works globally but treated us like we were his most important customer and event! All with humor and grace.Sent on 02/13/2015
