My fiance and me could be fired over taking a honeymoon!

Emily, on August 27, 2015 at 7:01 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 55

I was recently hired with my fiance, only in a different field than him. His bosses knew we'd both need time off and one of them even suggested we'd NEED to take off 3 weeks to really enjoys ourselves and have a great time. So we have a big honeymoon planned and wanted to take 3 weeks off at least. Now that a few months have past since the original conversation his boss has said to him: "That doesn't sound reasonable, what you should do is get an all-inclusive deal for 5 days somewhere so you only have to take a week off total," AND, "I've seen people be let go for less. You take off for that length of time and sometimes the company realizes everything works alot smoother with you gone. You could come back from your honeymoon and not have your job anymore." He also suggested that if we were serious about taking more than a week off that we'd need to fill out a sabbatical and request the time off. We've got 10 months till our wedding, what do we do? This is a once in a lifetime deal!

I don't know any job that is cool with taking 3 weeks off. Unless you have vacation time coming. It's crappy that he originally told you it was ok, but IRL that doesn't happen too often. You can easily take an amazing honeymoon in one weeks time.

I think it depends on how much you value your job. Personally I wouldn't risk it. I'd do a week and make the most out of it.

Take a shorter HM. I'm not sure what you mean by a boss suggested you'd need 3 weeks off, but it doesn't really go by whatever he said, it goes by your workplace's policies and how much time you've accrued.

    1. Will you and your FH have enough vacation time available to take 3 weeks each?

    2. What does your company HR policy state about vacation time vs leave?

    3. Is there anyone in your organization that you could speak with for further clarification other than this boss?

Cover your ass, know what you can take and what the costs/implications are. My company doesn't bat an eyelash at extended vacations but, not all are so supportive.

Wow! That's crazy! I'm Canadian so I don't know the U.S. labour laws (or, labor laws for you Smiley winking but here that would be completely illegal and we could go after them for wrongful dismissal. You have the vacation time, so you should be able to use it.Regardless, that's a really cold hearted thing to say and do. So sorry you're going through this

Uhh.... Don't you have an official way to request that time off at your job?

I know at my job you can take up to 2 weeks off without a problem and can extend that to 3-4 weeks off provided you either have the vacation time and get the approval 90 days out (at least) or get the approval and are willing to take the additional time unpaid.

We love our jobs and don't want to go above this guys head or anything, but I feel like him going back on his word (and suggesting how we spend our time to boot!) is wrong. It just really sucks because they got our hopes up about it because they were so for it two months ago.. And I'm guessing filling out a sabbatical is the official way to request the time off(?), but the business is really new and crazy right now. No one else there has asked for vacation time off so we didn't really know how to go about it.. and they've done some fishy stuff with reducing vacation time and trying to make people sign things without reading it lately, so I didn't want to overstep my boundaries since I've just recently been hired on. My fiances been with them since the beginning though (2 years) and has 1 or 1.5 weeks of vacation time coming. I guess I just thought we could take unpaid time off as well. I'm going to have to track down someone to talk to and just head this off before we're told we can't take time off at all and have to postpone it.. To complicate things further the HR guy just got fired before I was fired on and the woman they hired to fill his spot is still learning and only working part-time. I hardly ever see her, so we thought talking to our bosses would be where to start. (THANK GOD we did follow up with him, because we almost booked plane tickets before we were told that we could easily not have jobs if we leave for over a week!)

Do you have any of this in writing? I would never have enough guts to ask my new boss for 3 weeks off at a new job. Before you were hired you should have had this put in writing.

Just be happy you get to take anything. Sorry if that sounds harsh but FH just started a new job and we get two days. That's it. Take your week and be happy with it. It does suck that he suggested three weeks, but I've never heard of anybody taking three weeks for a honeymoon.

Is there an employee handbook you could refer to? 1 month would be amazing but Personally I would ask for a week and a half at the most and be content with receiving those days. Especially if you need or value this particular job.

Without knowing what field you're in I don't know if 3 weeks vacation is common practice. I think for a company you just started with you're already too personal with your boss. If the business is only 2 years off he may not be able to financially handle 2 employees leaving for 6 weeks. If you earn 3 weeks vacation per year and will be there for a year at the time of your honeymoon, it would mean you hadn't used any vacation at any other point in the year. I would think if there were an HR dept. you could request the three weeks now, giving them a years notice and get it approved in writing. Of he's serious you can't take it you'll know now and be able to plan appropriately. Of course a three week trip would be awesome but isn't practical formost people.

It sounds like he wasn't really offering three weeks but merely commenting that 3 weeks is what it would take to properly experience a honeymoon. You need to remember that everyone is replaceable. No one owes you anything and I think you need to look at this objectively, which you clearly are not.

It honestly doesn't matter what is typical at other workplaces. Current U.S. Law doesn't protect you on this. What matter is what your written policies say at work.

I personally would just take a shorter honeymoon. We are only taking 3 days off for ours and then possibly planning a longer one later on in the year.

I took off 2.5 weeks, BUT I work for a huge company and had approval from the president of HR. Much of mine was without pay due to using all my vacation days up with my sick father on FMLA. They were nice enough to play ball with me after I nearly had a mental breakdown while Dad was so sick. I also have a colleague who is from the Phillipenes and takes a month off about every year or 2 to go there to visit family. Generally we are limited to 2 weeks and only if you have the days.

Three weeks? WAT. Unless you've been at your job 10+ years I wouldn't expect three weeks vacation. 10 days seems like a good compromise... You really don't want to piss people off at your job.

If you don't get three weeks worth of vacation days, don't plan on taking that long of a honeymoon. Unpaid time off is never guaranteed.
