Beach Brides... or Beach theme wedding. DIY Seashell Bouquet (w/pictures)

MELN, on June 25, 2012 at 11:12 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 18

I saw this idea posted on the forums, and I loved it! I found some for sale on Esty, and other places, but I really didn't want to put up the amount of money they were asking (between $120 - $300, or even more if you wanted BM bouquets). So I decided to tackle this DIY myself. I purchased bags of seashells from Michael's for $5/bag (I bought 3), I also got hard foam (don't know the exact name, but they are used in flower arrangements...) for about $3, tiny 3 inch dow sticks about $2, and I already had a hot glue gun. I put it off for about 2 months because I really had no idea what I was doing, but this past Friday I decided to just do it and see how it would come out. This is what I ended up with...

I started with the foam stuff, the top part was oval shaped but I cut it so it would sit flat on top of the part that would become the handle. Note: the hot glue will melt the foam (stupid me) so you may need to find a different way to glue it. But I made it work, and it made a really strong bond.

After that I glued the tiny rods to the seashells, and then began to randomly stick them into the top part of the foam, and added a little dab of hot glue just to make sure they stayed put.

I continued to add shells all over and tried to keep it in a circular shape. By the time I got towards the bottom I realized it would be hard to wrap the handle, so I had to remove a few shells. So if you attempt this, it may be helpful to wrap the handle first.

There was some thin twine like stuff that came in the bag with the shell, and once i was done I randomly stick it in between shells to cover small gaps.

And there you have it... DIY Seashell Bouquet! The bouquet is a bit heavy, I actually broke the handle picking it up, but I hot glued it back together and put Popsicle sticks on the sides to make it more sturdy. I also wrapped the handle three times with ribbon.

Moral of the story... don't be afraid to DIY, you never know what you can do if you don't try!!

How many seashells did you use for this roughly? I am planning on making my seashell bouquets this weekend. I don't want to walk into it blind and buy 100 seashells if I will only need 50.
