My Engagement Ring is Turning Yellow?
The bottom of my engagement ring is turning a yellowish gold color....my ring is silver!! FS got it at Kay's and the papers and all say it is 14k and I know he spent a pretty penny for, so we feel that it should not be doing this! I took it into Kay's and the lady told me that it is from the chemicals in my body and that every ring does this and to fix it they have to send it out to "dip" it (whatever that means) and it will come back just like new, and also said that I will have to do this about every 3 to 6 months! Is this true and is she just feeding me a line of bullsh*t?

It is 14K WHITE GOLD not Silver. The yellowing just means the outer coating has worn away and you need to get it re-dipped. No this "coloration" is very common with white gold rings. When he got it at Kay's they probably told him you would need to come in every six months to get it re-dipped to keep your insurance on it and he didn't think to tell you. I know my sister has to do that with her Kay's ring, otherwise it doesn't remain insured.

Also, gold isn't normally WHITE so after a while the whiteness wears away and the true color of gold comes back.

it's true! it has nothing to do with the quality of your ring but from the toxins that your body releases through your skin. Usually if you go to the jewelery store were you bought it they do it for free.

Okay thank you FutureMrsMcCown!! I know I have to take it in every 6th months to get my diamonds checked, but they didnt say anything about dipping it to keep it insured...the only thing that sucks about this is she said that they will have to send it away, which means I will be without my ring for a couple of weeks ugh! lol I will feel naked without it!!! At least I now know that she isnt pulling my leg and ripping us off lol!

Yeah it can be a pain, but you are taking gold out of its natural setting, so the whiteness isn't going to last forever. I've had my ring for about 7 months and no discoloration yet and its 10K white gold.

@Future RSK, try taking it to another Kay's. I'm pretty sure some jewelers have the equipment to redip it on sight, but the one you went to probably doesn't. As long as you take it to a Kay's, it won't matter. Doesn't matter which Kay's it is.

mine did he same thing. it really does need to be done once i a while. if you got insurance and such it should cover the "dipping" charge. if not i had a ring cleaned and it was 35.00 i think

It's all true. But on the bright and shiny side (literally!) your ring will look beautiful and like new after every time that you get it dipped!

i didnt read all the way through before posting *tisk tisk*

they(at least mine) do not HAVE to be dipped every 6 mo to stay insured, the dipping is just whenever you want to do it. all tht has to be done is the diamond/prong check every 6. and those can actually be done whenever. mine is supposed to be due in December and June, but last time i got it done in july, and the lay said that it wont void the warranty unless a diamond falls out and it hasnt been checked

What ^ said!!

If your ring was silver, it would be turning black, not gold. I got mine at Shane Co. and they recommend bringing it in every 6 months to be redipped. The thing is, it only takes overnight whereas Kay's can take up to a week for you to get back. That would drive me nuts!! I get mine cleaned about every 2-3 months as well... I just take it up to Shane Co. and they put it in the cleaner for me and I'm good to go. Some people's rings turn yellow quicker than others... mine it takes about 6-months to turn yellow (and only on the bottom of the ring) but some it takes 3 months. It just depends on the person I think.

Here is some good information about it:

I don't know about that often, but I know what she's talking about. When we bought my ring, we got the lifetime warrenty so we would never have to pay for any of that (dipping, resizing, etc.) I've had my ring for almost a year now & mine hasn't changed colors yet, but she did say it could happen & when it did, just to bring it back to get it redipped. I hope this helps. :D

I have read a lot of ladies on here who have this problem with white gold rings. I have had my engagement ring since Feb 2009 and my wedding ring since Feb 2010 and I wear both every day and I don't take them off at all. I've never had my ring re-dipped. Both are 14k white gold from a local jeweler. I go in every couple of months to get it cleaned and then 5 minutes later I have my ring back and it's all shiny and new looking.
