It's definately worth hiring a wedding planner for the piece of mind you will receive, however, if you don't, make sure you keep very careful notes of all conversations with vendors and assign a a family member or friend to deal with all the vendors on your wedding day.  Also, make a list of family members and friends you want pictures taken with so that no one gets forgotten on the wedding day.
