Additional Questions and Answers
What should I bring to my wedding flower consultation?

I love a bride that is prepared!! Being prepared makes the appointment go much more smoothly. Choosing your wedding flowers can be very confusing. I suggest to my brides that they spend some time, sipping some wine and surfing the net and paging through wedding magazines to look at flower pictures from the comfort of their own home. After awhile you’ll begin to notice that certain types of flowers and bouquets make your heart sing, while others fall flat. When you see something you like, make a copy or rip it out!! That magazine won’t help you much after the wedding but it will sure help show your florist what you like. Now don’t be shy, make a note right on the picture why you love it!! Sometimes it might be the color, or the texture of the bouquet, or even just how the ribbon or other accents such as pearls or rhinestones are used. And don’t stop there! Feel free to collect pictures of flowers that you really don’t like. Believe it or not, these pictures help to create a vision of both what you would love and not love in your wedding flowers!

Bring pictures of your gown, the bride’s maids dresses, tuxes and swatches of fabrics are also a must! Don’t forget to make a list of all the personal flowers you will need for special family members such as parents, grandparents, readers, etc. If you have a list, you’ll be less likely to forget someone!

What would be realistic budget to set for my wedding flowers?

In our area, studies show that most couples spend $50,000 or more on their complete wedding. Estimating 8% of your overall budget for your your flowers (especially if you need floral centerpieces) would be a reasonable amount to put aside. This appears to be true for my shop, as our average wedding is approximately $4,000.00.

Your budget is a very personal decision. It’s ok to have someone advise you on what things cost but it’s up to you to set the limit!! Now, this is where the common sense comes in handy!! To some people flowers are a huge part of their wedding. They might envision flowers just about everywhere from fantastic bouquets for their bride’s maids to amazing centerpieces at the reception. Another bride may feel that flowers are a less important part of her big day and might only want flowers in very few places of her wedding.

Sharing your budget with your florist is very important. I can’t stress that enough. As I tell my brides, I can create just about anything for you but what I really want to do is design flowers that fit your tastes and your budget. You wouldn’t give your real-estate agent an open $$ amount when you house hunt, would you? What could be worse than being shown million dollar houses when you have a budget ¼ that size!! It’s the same idea here. Let us create arrangements that are within your budget, not over or under it!!

What is the most common mistake that you see couples make when planning their wedding flowers?

Couples do not always leave enough of their budget for flowers and that in turn causes the biggest mistake in that they do not leave enough money for their floral centerpieces. I usually think of the personal flowers such as your bouquets, corsages and boutonnière as a separate item from your reception flowers. It’s not unusual for your reception décor to be double or even triple the cost of your personal and ceremony flowers.

Most brides agree that their floral centerpieces are extremely important to the over look and feel of the reception yet they leave this item to be one of the least “funded” parts of the wedding. It’s always so discouraging to me when a bride comes in with inspiration pictures of centerpieces that are massive only for me to have to tell her that $60 or even $100 does not always buy this look for you.

If you are having your wedding at a gorgeous country club or in a lovely garden, let the location speak for itself. Most venues we are hired to decorate don’t need too much “window dressing” but most could use a gorgeous table display. Lots of candles, petals or a lush and low floral centerpiece fills the room with color and fragrance. Make your tables “Pop”! Why not “Wow” your guests with your elegance and creativity!! Give your tables the attention they deserve.

What are some cost saving ideas?

The biggest misconception that most brides have is that smaller is always less expensive. I have many brides tell me that they have very simple tastes but sometimes that very simple flower comes with a big price tag!! A big, lush bouquet of all open garden roses will always cost far less than a bouquet of mini calla lilies, stephanotis or lily of the valley. It has more to do with the cost per stem, the size of the flower and how many stems it takes to create the bouquet. It’s not unusual to need 80 stems of delicate lily of the valley to make a bridal size hand tied bouquet!! The best way to keep the cost of your flowers down is to use flowers that are in season. Use expensive, small sized flowers sparingly and use large stunning blooms such as peony and hydrangea whenever possible!! Now all this leads me to the next question….

What is required to book my wedding date with Monday Morning Flowers and when should I do this?

We usually suggest that you secure your wedding date with us when you are sure of your date and comfortable knowing that you would like us to help you with your special day. A confirmed wedding date (with a paid deposit) is a promise, like the committment that you both are making to each other, it is a serious matter. By the time you book your wedding date with us and pay the non-refundable deposit, we will have already been working on your wedding, by providing crucial information and hours of personal service, spending hours "behind the scenes" in our office, employing a staff, etc., to do all this work for you. Waiting too long can result in disappointment if others book before you. We are very careful to not over extend ourselves in order to provide timely service on your wedding day.

What is your favorite flowers to use in weddings and why?

I’m so glad you asked!! I love, love, love roses!! Why you ask? It’s because of their size, their durability, the color selection; the fragrance (who doesn’t love the smell of fresh roses?) and we’re back to that big flower thing again. A full bloomed rose can be huge and huge means you need less of them. Many brides come in thinking they do not want to use roses but then are quickly lured in by their gorgeous colors and fabulous shapes.

Is there a right or wrong way to go with my wedding flowers?

Not really. Pretty much anything goes today. Flowers are a personal choice and an excellent way to express your unique personality. Find the blooms that make your heart sing and you’ll be happy with whatever you choose!!
