Zola cash equivalent

Lyla, on September 16, 2016 at 4:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I caved to advertising and began a registry on ZOLA. I heard you could register items from anywhere and thought it sounded great. However, when registering bath towels from another website, Zola recommended allowing for a "cash equivalent for optimal guest checkout." Does this mean that my guests who think they're buying us bath towels will in reality be giving us a cash credit to purchase whatever? I just don't feel comfortable with that. I mean, we'd use it for what they gifted, but if I were the guest, I'd be ticked to know that my gift of fancy towels was in reality a 50 dollar cash credit that could be cashed out.

Your logic is spot on. It is deceptive and companies like this are generally frowned upon and considered tacky/rude. Stick to a traditional registry.

Yes, that's exactly what it means and is a perfect example of why cash registries and honeyfunds are considered tacky by many (most) people on this forum. Good catch!

Ugh gross. It didn't take me that long to register, but I never would have if I understood how it really worked

I feel similarly, OP! It's a shame things like this are becoming more common. It's in such poor taste.

Lyla - Try MyRegistry.com it's like zola, but you can turn off the cash equivalent feature. I had Zola at first too, but switched. It was annoying switching everything to the new registry but I'm glad I did it.

MyRegistry also let's you have a universal registry but I don't think they have a cash option, so that might be a better fit for you!

ETA - VJ beat me to it!

I'm registered on Zola and turned off that feature. Anything that is bought is shipped directly to us. I hated the idea of a cash equivalent too!

So glad I found this thread I was trying to create a more universal registry and didn't like that feature on Zola myself. Good to know about MyRegistry

We also used MyRegistry and loved it!

ETA: we had no tacky cash requests with it!

People are rude about cash registries because they are often inherently deceptive. If you want money for a honeymoon, just don't register. Honeyfund takes money from your guests and pockets it, and then your guests who bought your snorkeling excursion or steakhouse dinner don't actually realize you're getting a check, not an excursion. Nobody is saying to register for things you don't need. We are saying do not use companies that rely exclusively on deception and skim off the top of your loved one's hard-earned money that they have gifted to you.
