Zika virus and honeymoon?

Mr&Mrs89, on January 25, 2017 at 9:55 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 11

Hi, so my fiance and I are thinking of Dominican Republic for our honeymoon but there is an Alert 2 for the Zika virus in most of the carribean. This totally sucks, I don't know if we should risk it.

Anyone still traveling regardless?

Yeah. Zika is basically everywhere and if it's not somewhere, something else is. It's really not a big deal.

Are you planning on TTC right after your wedding?

First, talk to your doctor. Second, we are getting married in DR but will not be TTC right away.

If you're not looking to TTC within 8 months-1 year, you don't really need to worry. I got several mosquito bites while pregnant and my kid is fine. If you're really that worried, you should chat with your OB to see what they say.

My FH works studying the zika virus and has been on many emergency deployments and hasn't gotten zika. That being said, as cruddy as it is, wear deet bug spray and you should be alright

We really wanted to travel in the Caribbean, but ultimately decided we didn't want to risk Zika since we hope to have kids in the next few years. We're going to cabos instead. There are protocols you can follow (wear long sleeves and pants, spray with big spray, don't go out at dusk), but if you're really worried, you may want to search elsewhere, unfortunately.

Check with your doctor and the CDC for safety and recommendations.

We're going to Jamaica before our wedding (February trip, march wedding) and per the CDC recommendations we will be waiting at least 6 months from possible exposure before we even consider TTC. We also plan to follow up with our doctors before we actually start trying.

Well we weren't going to start trying to get pregnant until spring 2018..so few months after the wedding. I'm just worried that even if it's a few months and all is clear... miracously something will happen to the fetus(if I get pregnant) anyways if i do contact the virus lol I think of worst case scenarios all the time.

I went to DR for my honeymoon. I didn't even see a mosquito the whole time I was there. I also ventured off the resort, still didn't see any mosquitos. If you're going to a resort, they spray for them.

I had a call with OBGYN last week about this subject. She informed me that once we get back from the honeymoon we have to "aggressively try and prevent pregnancy for a minimum of 6 months after you return". She then proceeded to tell me all the horrible things that could happen if we happen to accidentally get pregnant. Not worth it in my book Smiley sad We will be honeymooning in Hawaii now.

My doctor said to wait 6 months after going to a place with Zika before trying. Nothing is going to happen. Just make sure you don't have it. We don't want to wait so we decided to go to Bali and Thailand. There are minimal cases there and very very low risk.
