Wwyd: Help me choose the Dj!!

EmeraldBride, on July 21, 2020 at 12:27 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 22

I am down to 2 drastically different DJs - I am struggling hardcore!

Option 1 - $895 for reception no matter the length - he DJ'ed two of my cousins weddings and they LOVED him - years and years and years of DJ/music experience - my wedding planner also loves working with him

Option 2 - initially $2500!!! but negotiated for $1800 for both ceremony and 5 hours of reception music - he not only DJ's but he plays a violin too and has been known to go out to the crowd and serenade the couple during dinner - he was recommended by one of my coworkers who hired him for her wedding - he has a video on the front page of his site: https://www.full-engagement-experience.com/ My wedding planner has heard about him and that 'he is really good!' but has never worked with him.

Here is a quick vision of my wedding: We are getting married in the Catholic Church. Afterwards, we'd like to go bar/brewery hopping and also do some photo ops. Our reception will be held at our home in our backyard. We are aiming for a romantic, earthy, and airy feel. We want to dance under the stars. We'd like to end our night with a bonfire and possibly a sparkler send off.

Omg option 2! DJ and live music for both ceremony and reception… If his videos look and sound good I’d say he’s the one. Plus, won’t you need music for the ceremony

Maybe it's just me, but I would not enjoy having someone play the violin directly to me at my reception. I also couldn't justify the huge price difference. Option 1 sounds better to me.

I’d go with option one. I think that the DJ/violinist is a really cool choice in certain environments. But your wedding seems to have more of a casual feeling to it. So the violin portion doesn’t seem as fitting.

Gosh you're right about this! I do plan on having a little bit of elegance to it but not overly formal. Something like this with lots of greenery, white round tables, kings table with farmhouse tables:

I prefer option 1. You said other guests loved him so you already have that feedback plus you can't beat the price.

I prefer option 1. There's something off to me about serenading us while we're trying to eat dinner. What if I'm chewing in the pictures when he first starts? What if there's something in my teeth? Do I just stop eating and stare awkwardly at a man I don't know well while he sings a love song?

For the cost and the awkwardness (to me, at least), I'd definitely go with the first one.

I think option 1. Cheaper and you already know he’ll do a great job. With the extra cash you could hire a violinist or quartet for the ceremony anyway. I am a violinist but I wouldn’t enjoy being personally serenaded either.

DJ #1 can still play elegant music at dinner if that is preferred. But seeing your inspo pics, I can see why you’re a little torn.

I actually like the option of the violinist walking around. It’s a nice touch in certain settings and I enjoy live music. I also don’t think it’s awkward. I’ve been to dinners where musicians walk around, whether it’s a violinist, saxophonist or mariachi. You listen for a little bit, take bites of your meal and the musician moves on to the next table. But it didn’t feel awkward. Seeing your inspiration pics, I think the violinist can work if he makes sure they move throughout the crowd. However, I appreciate unexpected touches at weddings that allow it to stand out and be pleasantly memorable. When I think about it, your cousins already had the other DJ, so my style and preference for an event is to do something different and not follow the crowd. Good luck with your decision.

I would go with option, especially with that price difference.

Yes! The unexpected touches is exactly why I like choice #2... it's something different than what we are used to! So far Mr Emerald and my mom have both said save the money - go with choice #1. So tough.

I'm going against the grain and picking option 2! It's a unique touch, and if he knows what he's doing it won't be awkward at all! Plus he can do the ceremony. Your inspo posts don't scream hardcore DJ party to me, so the bit of elegance mixed with traditional wedding DJ seems like a perfect fit to me.

BUT you do have to consider your budget, so go with your wallet. If you spend more here you'll have to spend less elsewhere.

I would say option 1! You have the recommendations from your cousins, which is a plus.

Personally I would go with option 1. DJ comes recommend by various people you know, and price looks great.

I would choose option 1. It sounds like you get the same thing for much cheaper. Not having a time limit is also very nice. And I wouldn't want someone going table to table playing violin during my reception, so that is not a selling point for me.

I would pick option 1 personally. If you would like live music, you can always hire someone to come play separately during dinner. We hired a harpist for the ceremony and cocktail hour (1.5-2HRS). Most quoted us around 300-600 & we are located in the Washington DC Metro area.
