Wrong name on the check?

f39cn4hdn, on September 6, 2013 at 4:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I just received an No RSVP with a gift enclosed. The name on the check is wrong. My fh's name is Tim. The check reads Mr. and Mrs. James Lastname

James is his middle name, and it's on the invitation, so I can understand the error. I just don't know how to solve the problem without hurting the gifters feelings.

Any ideas?

That's a tough one...I wish I had something for you, but I am at a loss.

Are you close to them? maybe you can just call and explain, or write a funny note about how you went to deposit their lovely gift and the bank let you know that the name was wrong, but how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness. I bet you get a new check.

I don't see how this would hurt the gifters feelings. First I would talk to your bank because they still might cash it. If they can't then just let the person know that it's not his legal name and the bank cannot accept the check because of it. I know I wouldn't think twice and just send another check and I think most would do the same.

Depends on which bank you use -

I have gotten checks made out to "karL," "Karanne" and my favorite is "Karol" instead of "karI" or "Kari Ann"and I just sign my real name and deposit it. I've never had a problem.

Also, itmay be possible for him to sign it T.James Last Name...

I used to work at a bank: follow what Future MrsP said. Have him bring ID with the middle name and sign "T. James LastName." They might make him also sign with the name on the account, but it should be ok at the bank if you explain what happened.

Both my mom & brother go by their middle names. It's weird. Anyway when people make checks out to them they always use their middle name and not their first name because most people don't even know their first names. They've never had a problem.

I don't think you will have a problem cashing it honestly. So, no need to mention it.
