Wrong Cake

Jacqueline, on August 27, 2020 at 8:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21
So....... sitting here enjoying our honeymoon and going through pictures to see that the cake delivered was not the cake we ordered. It’s the correct 3 tiered but no where near the fancy/decorated we agreed to. Of course, I never got a copy of our cake order for who knows why. I never asked?? I mean wedding is of course behind us now but my question is this.... would you reach out to the bakery and ask where the miscommunication was as far as the cake we had ordered? It’s not like they are going to make us another cake but I’m just curious how/why. And really without proof of order I really don’t have a leg to stand on. I guess the real issue is that the venue was paying $440 towards cake (For a “scaled back” version) and we paid the additional $560 to have It as the girl penciled out for us. I’m almost 99% sure We DID get the scaled back version. But why 😐

You signed a contract with the baker, right? If so, see what the contract says and if the cake you received does not match what you ordered, then I'd reach out to the baker and see if they agree to a partial refund. Even if you can't find your receipt, our contract with our baker was incredibly detailed as to exactly how the cake would be make, decorated, etc. I think the first step would be to check the contract

I would definitely not call that $1k cake, but at this point what are you really expecting from them?

I would make sure I had my receipt and proof of purchase, and talk to my bakery about the situation. Personally, looking at the photo of your wedding cake, while I don't think it's ugly, I honestly don't think its worth the $1000+ you're spending on it.

If if its not what you ordered, you can ask for a refund.

Unless the cake in the picture is in a major metropolitan city (NYC or L.A.), covered in all fondant and using the most expensive premium flavor upgrades, I have a hard time seeing how that would cost $1k even with the default wedding markup.

Definitely not a 1k cake. I’m a pastry chef and that’s a pretty but “rustic” cake. I’m not sure where you’re located, but that is most definitely a 300-400 dollar cake. Talk to your baker, there may have been some miscommunication. Do you have a picture of what you actually wanted?

I guess it’s more of finding out why it wasn’t what we ordered/paid for. If that’s how they do business Shame on them. Originally we Had anticipated 85 guests but at final count it was down to 62. So, does that have something to do with how much the venue was paying towards cake? Regardless, if it was going to be different than what we paid for a phone call And explaining why, would have been appreciated. (Side note: we did sign the paper she doodled on Drawing up our cake but we never got on for ourselves).

Hmm it's definitely something to include in your vendor reviews as a warning to future customers.

The girl at bakery sat with us and penciled out a beautiful cake while we sat with her. And it sure didn’t look like pic I shared. I plan to stop in on Monday and figure things out. I should think they would have kept the signed paper?? Then we can compare her penciled cake to the pictured/delivered cake.

I really don’t see anything wrong with you calling up the baker or bakery and asking them what happened because maybe they can give you some kind of refund or some partial refund

Definitely talk to them! It could have been a mistake or maybe they weren’t able to successfully do the original design like they thought. They possibly hoped that you wouldn’t notice and they could get away with it. Whatever it may be, talk to them. A reputable business wouldn’t want their name dragged through the dirt and should attempt to make it right. Sure, they can’t remake a cake at this point but maybe a partial refund, a free anniversary cake, or store credit.

Peace of mind. You know the feeling you get when you are right about something and just want it confirmed? My gut tells me the venue has “something” to do with it. Less guests so they would pay a lesser amount than what was first quoted. So, bakery “scaled back” the decorations. Just answers at this point and I will be sure to write reviews on both venue/bakery.

Yes I get it. Go for it. Get a peace of mind and if they can explain to you what happened then maybe you’d use them in the future for something, who knows! Or you can warn others.

I'm not sure I would recommend writing reviews until you alert the bakery of the situation and give them the opportunity to make it right. Oftentimes, when bakers make mistakes on wedding cake orders, they will issue a 50% refund and make a free anniversary cake for the couple. This exact situation happened to a friend of mind. Of course it won't change you not getting your original cake, but I'd reach out to the bakery before taking your thoughts to public reviews

Definitely couldn't hurt to call and have a conversation with them about it - they may be willing to refund part of it, especially if it's in your contract that you were supposed to receive a different cake. The worst you can hear is a no, so I think it's worth a try!

Even without a contract, if you have a receipt, a cancelled check, or something with the amount you paid on it, you should be able to look at a price list to see if that is anywhere near a $1000 cake (I don't think it is). I'd also bring that picture to compare with their book of wedding cakes to see what something similar costs. It's possible that they made a mistake in decorating it. It's also possible that you got the wrong cake, and yours went to someone else. Regardless, I'd ask for a partial refund on what you ended up with.

The caterers didn't even get the FLAVOR of my cake right. They had a version of it for our tasting but they brought us chocolate with white icing...we asked for a s'more cake. Soooo disappointing. That and they messed up my dinner order so I didn't eat anything (allergies).

Still...the rest of the day was really special, and it was a beautiful day. I totally get the frustration. Especially because food is the most expensive part of the whole wedding!

I would definitely follow up with both venue and baker. You at least deserve an explanation and an apology for scaling back without your prior approval.
