WR: Guest Declined But Sent Check (HELP!!)

We got back an RSVP card and the guests are not able to attend the wedding but sent a check. They didn't post date the check and I refuse to cash it before the wedding (it will expire like 5 days before the wedding. . . at least if I'm correct in my thinking that checks are only good for 90 days)....

What do I say in the thank you card in this instance since they are going to know we didn't cash the check?

I would call their bank & ask how good the check is for... I know my bank says my checks are good for a year after they're dated (which is crazy IMO)... but I would call to find out Smiley smile

Cash the check but don't spend it before the wedding... lol. Just like opening a gift before but not using it until after!

I work at a credit union, and our policy is 6 months. Although legally a check can never "expire" unless it specifically states on the check that it is only good for xx amount of days.

I had the same delima until I read blogs saying most people expect and appreciate you cashing the check within 2 weeks of writting it so they can balance their account

This actually happens ALOT in our culture. You cash it, send a thank you card maybe add wat u intend to use their gift ie a great dinner during your honeymoon, downpayment fund for a house etc

I believe (at least in California) a check is "good" for up to a year after it is dated. Here's the crazy thing. A check, even if post-dated, is still considered tender... so someone can cash it, even if it is post-dated (again, that applies to CA, and perhaps other states as well).

I do agree that you should hold on to it and not cash it until after your wedding.

    good luck!

They wrote the check now with the intention of you cashing it now!

Think of it this way- would you want someone holding on to a check of yours for a few months? What if they don't balance their checkbook and just look at their balance. Then, that check hits them in 3 months and it hurts...

Just cash the check and send them a very thoughtful thank you card!

Etiquette says you should cash checks right away.

See, I'd just follow their lead. They chose to send a check early - even though they declined, so if there's a break in etiquette, they made it. They wouldn't be offended if you cashed it and would probably be more upset if it didn't clear quickly.

You SHOULD cash the check. You are certainly welcome to leave the money in the envelope with the card and not touch it until after the wedding if you like, but if someone sent a check that early and didnt post date it, they are expecting it to be cashed.
