WR: Alcohol & liability??

Future Mrs. Brownie, on September 24, 2010 at 2:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new here and I need some help regarding alcohol at my reception. I have the option of providing my own alcohol at my venue without hiring a professional bartender. (It is just a banquet hall). I was thinking about providing just beer and wine. Will I be held liable for all of the people who consume alcohol at the reception? I have heard that home insurance companies sometimes offer insurance for one day to cover this sort of thing. Does anyone know anything about this?

I bet your venue would be able to help you with this.

Whether there is liability depends totally on the law in your state, so don't rely on anyone other than a lawyer in your own state for an answer on this.

As fpr insurance, you could talk to whoever writes your homeowner's or renter's insurance, or you could talk to a specialty company like WedSafe.

I strongly recommend you contact your Alcohol Beverage Control Board if your state has one. I work for the Virginia one. Not sure where you are having your event but I do know it varies by state.

Definitely check in to the laws in your state as well as with your insurance agent. Also check with the venue. Do they carry liquor liability insurance?

Liquor Liability insurance is expensive for businesses.

Even if you hire a bar tender, you could be held legally liable for any injuries or deaths cause to (or by) anyone who consumes too much at your event.

You also want to make sure that YOUR liability limits, on your homeowners or renters policy is high enough. You may not be found "guilty" should someone file a suit against you, but they will force you to defend yourself, via attorney fees.

Also, insurance claims are the one thing that you can never get out of. It is very important to be protected.

I do feel that hiring a professional bar tender is a great idea, though. They are professionals. They know when to cut someone off. Plus, since they are not a part of the wedding party (or family) they have an easier time cutting someone off, if needed.

Good point Kathy, hopefully they dont have to cut anyone off but there is always ''that''' person. some places require you to get insurance for the day and when i asked how much they said they have a person already that they work with and it was only a few hundred dollars but it was mandatory.
