Would you book your photographer without meeting them?

So the photographer we are interested in contacted us today. They dropped their priced by $500, and dropped their deposit from $700 to $200. So the photographer we are interested in contacted us today.

They dropped their priced by $500, and dropped their deposit from $700 to $200.

The only problem is we haven't met them... and won't be able to until the end of the year. We are currently living interstate from our hometown where we are getting married. We are moving back asap (anywhere between mid October and mid December) and won't be able to meet them until then.

They said that the deposit will be completely transferable, as they know we haven't secured our location. The deposit will also be refundable until 31st October... but I wouldn't want to rely on that!

Soooo what would you do? Pay now to secure the date, or wait until you met them in person?

I wouldn't work with a client until I met with them. Having a personality match is key to a successful day. We've said it a number of times, photography is not a commodity that you pick up off of the shelf at Squalor-Mart because it is cheaper there. It takes a great deal of research, sitting down and meeting with several photographers.

And September is still "Prime" season. Sounds to me like they need to make a bill and want to get some income.

Not to touch off yet another "My Photographer was $xxx" thread but the average starts around $2500-$3000 depending on where you live in the country.

He definitely isn't one of the "cheap" photographers, and he sits in about mid range for our area. I've sent a lot of emails to and from with the photographer, and she seems really nice... hmm I dunno....

No, We adored the 1st photographers portfolio online and in person...but our visions just did'nt click....Remeber you will be spending alot of time with this person/s you really need to make sure personalties are a match and visions are the same. You cannot get that over the phone imo. We clicked right away with 3rd interview, they ask ?? as did we , made suggestions, ask our thoughts etc... Also if we see any shots we love just email and they will keep in our portfolio , 2 weeks before wedding meet in person again go over anything we have sent them or any ideas they may have and agree on the must haves! All in written contract! HIRED!!!

These posts are makin me nervous... I am booking my photographer without meeting him.. our wedding is in Mexico so meeting prior is really not possible.. I've looked at all his work for months and he is by no means the cheapest.. Thing is I don't really have a choice.

I would wait because in my personal option the pictures are one of the important parts of the entire wedding. The flowers, cake and other things of that nature no one will remember but the photos will be the one thing that you will hold onto for life. Make sure you have the best. I made the mistake once and at my second wedding and the photographer was cheaper and there was a good reason for that we was terribe. So be very careful when choosing your photographer.

Short and sweet.....I would never book a photographer that I have not met in person first. I had to meet mine, get on the BBB and check out all her reviews first. Anyhoo...good luck.

I am a photographer and I wouldn't pay anyone a dime until I meet them. Someone who is dropping their price so much is either not confident about the quality of their work or is a scam! I would at least try and Skype with this person to get a feel of them. If you have any doubt, don't do it. Reputable companies know how to deal with clients and they know how to make a bride confident that they are the right vendor. Be careful & good luck!
