Wood slab centerpieces

Emily, on September 1, 2016 at 9:55 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

I was curious to know if anyone else used wood slabs as a base for their centerpieces. FH uncle cut some up for us, but the smell is terrible. They are in my basement now, and we have a fan on them and a dehumidifier running in hopes to get some air through them. Just wondering if anyone knows how to get the smell out of them and how to prevent them from cracking. FH is afraid once they completely dry out, they will crack. I couldn't really find anything super useful on Google. Hoping you lovely ladies and gents can help! Thanks!

Do you know what kind of wood it is?

We are using them & they have been drying out for almost a year. We literally took them out of our firewood pile. Lol but they don't smell bad or are not cracking. I'm thinking it could be the type of wood..

Are you sealing them at all? A lot of the ones I've seen are sealed. Maybe that would help with the smell??

You need to seal them. We're considering them and contacted a etsy seller who sells them sealed or raw. I believe for the sealed they used a shellac sealer but you should be able to find that or water based sealers online and do it yourself.

We have about half them right now in the basement but they don't smell.

Have you sealed them? A friend of ours is making the rest of ours and using a seal called pentacryl.

I have not sealed them yet. They just got delivered to us this week. They type of wood is oak. I'll have to look into sealers and hopefully that will help. I just know if I can't get the smell away, I won't be able to use them at the wedding! My entire basement stinks like wood lol

You're going to want to dry them out then seal them.

My brother said wax would seal them to avoid cracking but you better stop the fans since that will quicken the drying process and chances of splitting. I got to the idgaf point and don't care of mine Crack so I did nothing to them.

That's a good point, Randee. That's kind of where I am, I'm 29 days out, there isn't much I can do now! Just wanted to at least try and keep them nice. Thanks for all your help everyone !

We have a bunch of birch drying now. It was free, so I'm hoping it's useable. I'll be able to tell soon, so hopefully I won't have to go hunting for more! It is currently drying in my moh's basement, and she said she hasn't smelled anything
