Wood Pallet Reception Seating?

Amanda, on January 17, 2018 at 6:16 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 30

Hi! So, I'm planning a November wedding in Florida and it's going to be rustic, with a little bit of glitz and elegance. But I'm doing this all on a pretty tight budget. I LOVE the idea of the wood pallet tables. They work great with the general theme and outdoor setting I'm going with AND it suits my budget. My friend can get these pallets easily for me through his job and often uses them to burn during bonfires. However, I'm very concerned with the pillow/floor seating not being comfortable enough for everyone. Has someone out there done this? If so, how did it go for you? Are there any other alternatives? I provided pictures below to give you all an idea. Also, There will not be a full sit down meal. Only drinks and some Hors d'oeuvres.

EDIT: When I say glitz and elegant, I only mean a small bit of details. My theme is definitely more simple and rustic, but some of my decorations will be rose gold, rose gold glitter/sequin. The plates have rose gold trim on them. The vases for the centerpieces are gold milk bottles. It's MAINLY rustic. So, I don't mean FULL on glitz.

Are you going to buy all the pillows? For 100 or so guests? This doesn't scream glitzy to me, which you want. I'd be uncomfortable, especially with all of the bugs in Florida. There's no way I'd be sitting on the ground for dinner. I live in Florida and that's a no from me. Cute idea for a different kind of party though.

No, I'm only having about 30 guests. I would be getting the pillows. Which I was thinking of looking around at thrift stores. It's more of a rustic, but with touches of rose gold/glitter. Which the glitz is more in the decorations and their color. I was thinking of putting sheets around/under the wood pallets so theres at least more coverage than JUST pillows? Also it's going to be in the early afternoon. So it's going to be more so just cake a like fruit, cheese, and cracker platter type of thing.

The pictures are cute, but this look doesn't come across glitzy and elegant. This would be very uncomfortable for me, especially wearing a dress and heels. Even I didn't wear a dress, it is hard for me to sit on the ground for any length of time. I couldn't imagine how any older people would fare. Also, pillows can be very expensive, even renting them. If you want to do this, perhaps let it be your lounge area to the side, and not the main area where people sit for your reception.

This would be cute for kids but not adults. Is everyone young? That would be hard on older people and women in dresses; cant really sit indian style if you know what I mean.

Sitting on pillows on the ground is not elegant. I wouldn’t be happy as a guest sitting on the ground. What about guests who might have difficulty getting up from that position?

Most of the people being invited are my age (21) but there will be the parents, photographer, and others who are older. This is being done at my friends house, which he does have a large table on his patio which would probably be better for those that cant sit on the ground. But I don't know if a majority of people just wouldn't be down with that or what.

I think that looks so awesome!! As long as you let your guests know how seating will be You should be fine. It probably won’t be the comfiest but they won’t sit their all night.

I struggle with sitting on the floor depending on my dress and heels. My dad would be unable to because of back problems and I have other relatives who wouldn't manage either. It's a cute idea, but unless everyone coming to your wedding is super healthy (and it's very hard to know that people actually have back problems etc.) and dressed appropriately, I would pass

I get uncomfortable after sitting on the ground for about 5 minutes and I'm young(24). I would be pretty upset and uncomfortable if this was my only option for sitting/if I was supposed to eat dinner in this position. I highly recommend not doing this for the comfort of your guests

I think this is cool to have one or two stations set up like this, like for lounging but not as the only sitting area. (like in the picture) Guests with back issues could have a problem with this. Is no one on your guest list elderly? I can think of 10 people on my guest list who no way would be able to sit on the floor like this. I wouldn't make my guest do this.

And have you looked at the price of pillows? I wanted two throw pillows for my bed and the cheaper ones were $25 each.

Have you looked into renting farm tables? You’d get the same style but your guests would be more comfortable.

The other thing that concerns me about the pallets is the potential for splinters. Pallets aren’t built to be used this way and can be very rough.

Pillow/ground seating will not be comfortable enough for everyone. Table rentals are not very expensive (~$10 per table for me and I live in an expensive area) so probably cheaper than pillows anyhow. You can incorporate pallets into the decor but they are not ideal eating surfaces.

Haha I have an actual phobia of splinters and these pics are giving me anxiety but I figure everyone doesn’t have my ...”issue” , but your comment makes me feel a little validated in feeling stressed 🤣. Splinters are a legitimate concern!!

Do you know someone handy who could turn them into actual tables? My husband is a carpenter for a living and made me 3 tables strictly out of pallets that we used for the s'mores bar, cake, and name card tables.

I agree with everyone else that this would be super hard in dresses/heels/older guests, and I'm usually all for the rustic/reclaimed look.

As a guest I would be leaving asap. There is no way I would even attempt that kind of seating in a dress.

I love how it looks. As a guest, I'd like a heads up so I can plan my attire. Might be a bit hard with dresses and for some people physically with sitting on a pillow. But its a know your crowd thing. If theres not a big meal, make sure to do it at a non meal time.

Agree with PPs that not all of your guests will be comfortable with this as the only option for seating, even if they are young. Also, even if you aren't doing a full plated meal, that would still leave their only options to be sitting on the ground or standing (plus getting up and down can be hard for some people).

I do think the inspo pics look really nice, but what about doing some mixed seating options to keep the vibe you are going for? Some low cushion seating mixed with some bench or mis-matched chair picnic tables even?

ETA : the tables (and even those benches if you know someone crafty / can find proper-sized cushions) could be made from the pallets you mentioned

So, I've looked into rentals, as someone mentioned farm tables, and I found a package deal that I can probably work into my budget. I appreciate everyone's feedback and alternative ideas. It really means a lot. Thank you guys. Smiley laugh
