Winter wedding- outdoor ceremony??

anr07, on May 12, 2013 at 11:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

We are finally deciding on a date and are leaning towards the beginning of December... Would it be absolutely crazy to have our ceremony outside?? According to my weather search, the highs are in the mid 50's. Opinions?

Where I'm from, December is in the 60's...so I understand your point of view...

However, you will have some cold natured guests so if you're really determined to do this outdoor ceremony, make sure you advise all your guests to dress appropriately...

Also, in case the weather could get worse, have a back up indoor ceremony venue waiting...50's is mild but I wouldnt push my guests being outside in 40's...

That's very close to Christmas but goodluck I don't think a winter wedding would be bad but doing it outside is risky esp. With you wearing a dress and ur bm an moh..I'm sure it will be awesome though!

If you decide to do an outdoor wedding, make sure the venue has a backup plan and it is still within your budget! That way if it does rain you are ready for it!

I love winter - if FH loved winter (it's his least favorite) - I would have pushed for a winter wedding as well.

I think if the weather is in the 50's that might not be too bad. Winter here could be 75 or it could be -14. You never know. lol.

But, even if it's 30 degrees and snowing - guests will know ahead of time that it's outdoors and can plan accordingly. I second what laudie3a says - make sure there's a back up plan and that it's within your budget Smiley smile

50s in December would be too cold for an outdoor wedding.

For me, temperature is all relative. Going into Winter, once the temp goes into 50s it is officially "fricking cold." The winter jacket is out. Scarves. Gloves. It might as well be below freezing.

Coming out of winter in March when the temperature is 50, I'm like "Good God Hallelujah! It's spring!" and it feels wonderful and warm and beautiful.

So with that said, I would not want to sit outside 50 degree weather in December. Even in March in 50 degree weather, while I enjoy being outside and the "warmth," I'm still doing that in long pants and a sweatshirt or jacket and boots. I wouldn't want to sit outside in 50 degree weather in wedding clothes, which means most likely a dress with exposed legs, dress shoes, etc.

Everything MrsO said! I'm from the Northeast and that's exactly how it feels. But if your area is acclimated and 50 feels the same coming in as it does going out then I guess go for it. For me, id prefer to not have to wear a coat for the ceremony and my fiancé always sniffles when it's a bit chilly out.

We are doing the ceremony outside at our larger pond. Instead of chairs, we will have long benches with quilts on them that we have made over the years. It's going to be col and I hope snowy. My caterer is looking for some of those outdoors heater to put around for people too. We are going to have a big coffee/cocoa bar and I think we will have it from the beginning instead of just after dinner.

I like MrsC's idea of the quilts and outdoor heaters. Last year the weather here in the beginning of Dec was cool, but not cold. I'd surely have a back up plan in place. Otherwise I think that it's doable. Maybe have some hot cocoa available during the ceremony?

Mrs C I love your ideas!!! I've thought about doing some sort of hot chocolate bar, but the quilts and heaters are so clever!

I totally understand everyone else's concerns about not wanting to put guests out in the cold lol but I was just thinking if it was a mild start to winter maybe it could happen(with a back up plan of course!) Thanks for the input Smiley smile

We are getting married outdoors, December 31st in south Texas on the bow of a ship. If it rains we have our reception area holding a second space for us.

I'm having an autumn wedding. That was as close as my FH would let us get to winter! LOL!!! But if I could have what I want, I would get some of those large outdoor heaters to have outside. I would have specialty coffees and hot chocolates so everyone can really stay warm. Depending on the size of your wedding, I would even do blankets/throws for everyone, but I have always loved the winter backdrop for weddings. Especially if it snows Smiley smile Good luck!!!

I'm from the northeast too, and I'm still in sweats and jackets. Not to mention I still have the heat on at night. 50 is cold to me. No way my ass is sitting outside even with blankets an heaters. Good luck with whatever you decide
