Wines for wedding

Amanda, on July 18, 2015 at 10:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

Hi! We are on a tight budget for our wedding. Our venue allows us to bring in our own alcohol for the wedding so we are doing wine and beer. Someone recently told me that I should purchase my wine from Trader Joe's.

Has anyone done this? and if so which wines were your favorite?

Thanks!!

I've never had Trader Joe's wine, but I have heard it's cheap. We are paying a chemist friend that makes beer and wine for fun make us several cases of wine for our RD, OOT guests welcome bags, and the wedding. It's fairly inexpensive for him to make, and really good wine. Just doing a red and a white. We are just doing some custom labels for them as well. Do you know anyone or have any friends that do this? Might be a cheaper option than some store wines. I don't want to knock Trader Joe's wine, since I haven't tried it, but for $2, I can't imagine it will be all that great. (Two buck chuck, right) I could be completely wrong though! Maybe it is fairly decent? Good luck!

I think Trader Joe's wines are a great choice. Don't have a favorite, but I think you can't go wrong. I would just go with a white, a red and maybe a blush. Barefoot is also a good one, both whites and reds but the pinot grigio is my favorite.

TJ's does have some good prices but I have to disagree with UofMichiganGirl. I'm not SUPER picky about wine but 2 buck chuck is not very good. I'd have to have had a few drinks before I willingly drank it. I'm sure you can fine some in the 5-7 dollar range that taste better!

ETA. If you buy in bulk, most places will give you a discount! At Total Wine, it was 10% off if you bought 6 bottles or more.

I haven't had the chance to try out their wines yet but my step dad loves their red wine and apparently you can get a whole case for $36

There's also nice boxed wines out there that are more inexpensive than buying individual bottles. But, I would only do this if your bartender won't make it obvious that you're doing boxed wine.

Probably not as cheap as TJ's, but we went with Bevmo (did our own alcohol too). We liked that we could do a tasting and that we could return unopened bottles. Spent about $10 a bottle.

Total Wine & More - has good price ranges. We haven't bought our wine and beer yet, but for cases of wine they have discounts (I believe 10% off) and then whatever you do not open, you are able to return for a refund.

Their beer was a little pricey for me (we found a local place, that is charging a little less for kegs) - however for kegs, some venues (at least mine) will only take delivery/drop off the day of the wedding. Since I will not (nor any family member) will be helping with setting up personalization items at the reception venue, I will have to find a place that will also deliver (if we do kegs) -- just keep a possible delivery charge in mind as well.

@Amanda - yeah I never heard of them until my venue coordinator suggested them to me! So I'm definitely going to try a handful of wines before deciding on which one to provide (lots of choices there).

I'm doing the same thing. I plan on buying our wine at trader Joe's. FH and I are not big drinkers and not too many of our family and friends are either. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between a good bottle of wine and a bag bottle. My daughter used trader Joe's for her wedding (that's how I found out about them) and it was fine. I plan on offering a white and red.

I hadn't started thinking about this, but I like some boxed wines! I'm not on like, a Franzia route, but there are some good ones that are in smaller boxes that I've tried and used when traveling (like on a cruise).

FMIL and I were just talking last week about wedding alcohol. I think we're going to get a group of ladies together for a tasting. Buy a bunch of inexpensive wines and see which ones surprise us. I was in Walmart today and their Oak Leaf $3 wines were SO picked over. Practically bare. The moscato was completely sold out. So I'm guessing that's pretty popular.

I have heard good things about 2 buck chuck from Trader Joe's but have never had it myself. I would see if you can find Flip Flop they have a good Moscato (sweet), Pinot Grigio. I can get them from my state liquor store for about $5 a bottle when not on sale. Just depends on where you live.

We are planning on doing the same thing and just tried the pinot grigio and it's a little sweeter than other pinot gri's I've tasted.. but it's ok. Also got the merlot to try it out.

IDK about Trader Joe wine lol but if you're asking what to serve- first make sure your venue will allow you to serve red wine (some won't, because it can stain furniture/rugs). If you can serve red, I would serve 3 wines- a white, a red and a blush. For white, Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay, for blush White Zinfandel, and for red a Merlot or Cabernet.
