Well that's BS. Some brides would have loved to see the different opinions of wine if they are buying alcohol.

Della, she's not talking about the one about the wine everyone likes. She's talking about the drawing I was holding to raffle off some gifted wine.

Sad. Janeen if you have this figured out, and will share you logistics with me I would love to do a round later in the year. I have a ridiculous wine stash.

Seriously, guys, there are a lot of laws and general rules in place for stuff like this (and giving away stuff on the internet in general). I'm curious how the illegality would be handled? How do you get around that? Just wondering.

I love free booze, but if you need to get different opinions on wines, just go to a wine tasting or something.

Someone pointed out that it's not legal and I guess people decided to flag it. It is certainly legal to buy wine from a certified seller and ship it to someone through their process, which is what I was going to do if it wasn't legal for me to do. People need to calm down. lol

I could try again, but it's likely that it will get flagged again, so I'll have to think about it.

But even buying from a certified seller, you're still breaking laws by holding a give-a-way. There are so many restrictions on contests and give-a-ways.

Not always. There are states that don't allow resellers to sell online. It's like....radar detectors in Virginia. I can't buy one here, I can't enter a giveaway for one while here, I can't buy one online living here because they are illegal here and there are transactional laws in place for each state. States are strict on booze. And also - though I'm not sure what WW's policy is on such things - it might make WW accountable for giving you the space to give away alcohol.

Not to mention, the FTC has those policies in place, too. I can't even give away BOOKS on my blog to random winners without following strict guidelines.

Too many ways to get in trouble, not worth the risk. Just give it to some friends.

That part I wasn't aware of since people to random acts of kindness all the time using the same type of system on various groups/boards that I'm on lol. So that part is understandable.

I'm not talking about re-sellers. I can buy from the vineyards directly and they can ship to the states that it's legal in. I already called and asked, sheesh lol.

But I do understand the other problems with it.

That's strange. I'm pretty sure you can ship wine across Canada. The only laws that change province to province is selling it, like in Ontario you have to buy beer from specific beer stores that have a menu, where as in BC there's private and provincial stores that sell everything, and they're starting to sell in grocery stores. I can't see why there would be laws about what you could and couldn't give as a gift.

And also, there's been threads on here before about people wanting to give stuff away to pay it forward, etc. Is that actually not allowed on WW?

I definitely couldn't ship any of the wines from the vineyard to canada. The vineyards have to have a license to ship to the states in question and they assured me they have licenses for "most states". There are a few exceptions and if someone had been picked from a no-shipment state, I was going to do something else for them. I had no idea about the gifting rules, but it makes sense if you're holding a contest of some kind.

It's illegal to ship it across state lines. Even has an authorized dealers. For example I can't get cans of pink sofia champagne shipped to vegas.

Andi, that's simply not true. The Orchid vineyard, for instance, has a license to ship to florida because they've shipped to my friend who purchases from them regularly. The vineyard in Virginia can ship to me and I live in Maryland. Maybe the difference is that she was the one doing the purchasing, instead of me buying it on her behalf, but they've diverted my quarterly shipment to her before, so maybe not.

I can get wine shipped to me from outside the state... Maybe it's only certain states that can't?

Yes, absolutely, certain states do not allow it at all. Certain states (like Maryland) require that the shipper have a license to do it. Maryland even requires vineyards within the state to have a license to ship and it's only recently legal (within the last two years). But it's not true that it's not legal at all, almost all of my quarterly vineyard shipments come from out of state vineyards and Maryland is a total nanny state.
