Wine poll! Tell me what's the best!

Ashley<3Ryan21, on August 11, 2015 at 4:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

So FH and I are not really wine conneseurs (to the point I don't even know how to spell it) and we are providing table wine to our guests. Trying to choose what variations of red and white to go with. We're pretty settled on a Pinot for the white but I'm in the dark on red.

What's the most popular out there? Cab Sav, Chardonnay?

We are serving all three meat categories with maple chicken, mango halibut and roast beef so it's a pretty wide matching range.

Tell me what you love!

Oh, man, do I love wine and wine pairings. So, you're going with Pinot Grigio for the white - are you having two white options? Chardonnay is always a good white to have. I think Pinot Noir is a good red because it's easy to drink. It pairs best with fish. Both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are good with beef and other red meats, but I'd go with Cab Sav over Merlot because Merlot is very dry and tannic and most people don't like the tongue feel.

If you're only going with one of each, I'd say Chardonnay and Cab Sav. If you're going with two, I'd say Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay for the whites and Cab Sav and Pinot Noir for the reds.

Also, Wine Folly has some great pairing charts for wine! http://winefolly.com/review/simple-food-and-wine-pairing/

    Ok. I have thoughts.

If you have chicken and fish on your menu, a chardonnay is a nicer white to have than pinot grigio. But if you want the pinot grigio, you need a lighter red - I'd go with pinot noir.

Reasoning: chicken and halibut don't go well with red wine, but are also too heavy for a light wine like pinot grigio. If want the pinot grigio and people want to have a wine that could go with ALL foods, then a pinot noir could work for the red.

Or you could go for chardonnay for the white, a richer red like cabernet sauvignon would be nice. Or stick with the pinot noir - both good choices.

tl;dr: pinot noir or cabernet sauv for the red; rethink the pinot grigio and consider a chardonnay for the white.

Viognier is an amazing white wine and it pairs well with both chicken and fish. I tend to drink more reds, but this is on my list of favorites. Syrah is a really great red wine that would pair well with the beef and also be a great pairing with your maple chicken. Happy wine tasting!
