Wine brand selection?

Ellen, on August 1, 2017 at 10:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

Our caterer allows us to purchase the alcohol provided for guests, which is then served by their bartender. I have no problem with the beer selection! Wine selection is a different story...

What are your favorite affordable brands of wine (we need ~54 bottles)? Has anyone seen or served 1.5L bottles during a reception?

I would check out prices at liquor stores in your area and they can also be great at recommending. I personally think regular 750ml bottles look much nicer for a wedding. The large bottles seem a little cheap and also will limit your options to cheap wine that is made in that size

Not sure if it's near you, but Costco (Kirkland brand) has some pretty decent "cheap" wine. We actually just had it tonight where I said it actually wasn't that bad. They're the double bottles too.

Do you have a Total Wine near you? They have great "winery direct" brands for around $10. The employees are super helpful.

Cupcake is yummy sweet and affordable! It's a white wine in a yellow bottle and is sweet. If it's in your budget, I'd def include that one! I only drink white so I cat suggest a good red. Sorry girly!

That's awesome you found a venue that will outside drinks! Good for you! I'm jealous. Lol.

There is a great rose brand that's called Folie Jolie I think and it comes on larger format bottles... it's not cheap though

I ordered from Total Wine (not sure their reach or if any are near you) because they take returns so we over-ordered).

We have 1 sparkling, 1 red, and 1 white.

    Sparkling is Rondel Semi-Seco Cava

Red is Lindemans Cabernet Bin 45

    White is Bogle Chardonnay

We are serving the large bottles of Cabernet because we are fairly certain we are using all of them. We are getting the smaller bottles so we can return them if we have too many.

We are serving Cupcake wine at our reception. Their moscato is amazing, so we will have that and whatever red my mom picks out (I'm not a big red wine drinker). If you order by the case from their website it saves you 15%. Otherwise you can usually find it for $10-15 in stores.

I just had a celebration of marriage. We bought the wine at Costco. My faves were the Menage a Trois and the Chateau Ste Michelle riesling.

I would suggest Ménage a Trois as their wine is really good and is affordable, but not considered a "cheap" bottle. When buying wine in bulk make sure you get a discount! Most places will give 15-20% off. I would definitely serve the wine in regular bottles. I went to a wedding a few weeks ago that served wine in double bottles and I found it really tacky.

My favorite brand is Stella Rosa. I've liked every one I've tried. They usually run from $10-$11 a bottle.

Total wine rocks. And yes, the wedding I did on Saturday, (very, very high end historic location) had 1.5 ltrs. I think it just makes sense, honestly.

You could also check out online sites like Splash.com and Wine Insiders. They regularly have sales that brings the cost per bottle to less than 6.00 delivered; you can order all red, all white or mixed. We do this almost every month, and the wine is always decent.
