Wine Alternatives?

Bella, on February 9, 2021 at 2:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 24
Hey y'all! We're planning on doing a wine and beer bar but... I realized I'm not a fan of most wine. I like Moscatos and Zinfandels (Arbor Mist, Stella Rosa) but that's about it. Not a fan of bold wines. Most of my family are legit wine drinkers so I feel like serving fruity wines wouldn't go over easy. We're planning on doing BBQ catering. Any alternative ideas or lighter wine options?

I agree with this - sparkling wines are an option! You could also do cider. Other wines that might go over well could be like a Riesling - maybe one that's semi sweet or semi dry?

I'd get some of what you like and some of what they like. Are you only able to pick one?

You can offer the Moscato or zinfandel that you prefer, then have another option for your guests? If you haven't had any showers yet, you could always have a wine tasting station set up for your guests to taste and vote on which wine they prefer. I would provide maybe 3-4 red wine options for the tasting, and just pick whichever 2 had the most votes. I went to a shower that had this and it was fun!

The sparkling wine and cider suggestions are also great, but if you're wanting a red wine or something to please your big wine drinkers, the wine tasting station is an option!

I love the idea of a tasting station at a bridal shower!! Great way to figure out what wines your guests like in a fun way. I agree with Shelly - pick your favorite wines, and then also add a couple red wines (possibly choose them after doing a tasting station with some of your guests, or even just have wedding party help you decide)?

Unfortunately they're all out of state so a wine tasting isn't really an option. I guess I could just actually ask everyone what their favorite wine is and find something similiar??

You could also do that! Are any of your bridal party near you? Lisa had a good idea about just asking the wedding party help you pick one! If that's not an option either, then asking a few wine drinkers what reds they prefer is fine!

If you can only serve one red and one white, then I agree with Amanda: I'd go with Pinot Grigio for the white and Cabernet Sauvignon for the red. As hosts, sometimes we need to serve what we know our guests will like. At my wedding, one of our entree options was something I'm actually deathly allergic to (salmon) but we chose to do this because we knew it would be a hit with our guests, which it was. Same with the appetizers: we served several fish-based ones that I couldn't eat, but we knew my crowd would want them. I think your best option is to go with safe wines that you know people would like, or add on a fruity wine in addition to the safer white wine. I will admit: I would be disappointed as a guest if my only white wine option were a super fruity option like moscato. I would do 2 safe popular wine options like Pinot Grigio and Cabernet Sauvignon and add a fruity option in addition if that's what you personally like

Totally agree. These are the most popular white & red in the US. (Chardonnay & Merlot are up next on that list).
You really aren’t aiming to hit everyone’s favorite (that would be impossible with lots of people and tastes!) but just provide something they think is acceptable. Sparkling wines and ciders are very sweet and pretty polarizing- unless you have a younger crowd that you know will enjoy them, it’s better to choose something more standard.

If you’re family loves wine, I’d go with a Cabernet for red.

My view is that you need to cater to your crowd and not limit your alcohol choices to what you would drink only. If it were me, I would offer a white wine and a red wine (in addition to beer) so that you can please both those who like something milder and those who have a taste for stronger wines.

I’m a huge wine drinker myself and fruity wines lead to awful hangovers😂😂 it’s customary to offer Pinot noir, Cabernet, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and sparkling or sweet of some kind. While the wedding is for you the reception is a thank you to your guests for attending. Cheers!

I agree with PP serve sparkling and the basics for everyone else. Elouan is a great one for a Pinot noir and rose. They also have a Chardonnay. But don’t forget to get something for you! Even if it’s just a few bottles that yours alone.

A chardonnay (white) and a cabernet (red) would be safe options. You could also offer a Riesling which is something you might like based on what you said you typically drink.

Helllo, I'm a HUGE wine drinker here...

I think like others said, it's important to keep in mind what others like because I don't think (and I could be wrong here!) that you want to drink it all by yourself! As others said, a Pinot Grigio is a very safe option for a white wine. Reislings have different levels of sweetness as well. You could try to find a semi-sweet Reisling that would appeal to your wine drinkers who like sweet like you or who like a drier wine. For reds, I would do a Cabernet or a Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir tends to be a little lighter and sweeter than Cabernet, so a lot of people who don't drink wine a lot find it easier to drink. Cabernet is THE red for most red wine drinkers, it's very bold.

Are you doing champagne toasts as well? Our venue allows us to pick a traditional champagne or a sparkling moscato, so if you have that option, you can always try to add that sparkling moscato to the regular wines as well!

As the host, you should cater to what your guests like, especially if they're wine drinkers. I'd go with Cabernet for the red and either Pino Grigio or Chardonnay for the white.
