Will guests come to a wedding on a Friday during Lent?

Diane, on March 23, 2013 at 6:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I want to get married Friday March 14th of 2014. The issue I'm having is that my fiance is thinking that some of his family might not come because its a friday during Lent. I know there is a restriction for meat during lent, which we would offer a fish option, but are there any rules saying you cant go to a wedding on a friday during lent? Please help

I've never heard of any other set restrictions to fast for anything besides meat. People can choose what they will be giving up for lent but nothing else that should affect everybody.

Hopefully nobony chooses to give up going to weddings for lent.

The only Friday that you can not get married in a church anyways is Good Friday.

However I wouldn't give up going to a wedding during Lent on a Friday but I would offer more then just fish for those who practice Lent.

Some people are allergic to Fish and some don't care for it. I would off selection (with multiple choices to put in it)

Being Catholic and allergic to Fish I would be incredibly offended if they only dish you had as a option to me was fish given the fact that my religion does not allow me to have meat on Friday during Lent.

    Thanks everyone =)

@Soon2beMrs.K: Thats true. Do you have any ideas of things that can be offered instead of fish for dinner? I was thinking of any of the vegetarian meals that the venue makes.

Some priests won't marry you during Lent b/c it's a hilly season and one of preparation and reflection (not celebration), but guests shouldn't have an issue.

You don't have to have fish either. A non-meat option is fine (eggplant parm, pasta primavera, etc, although fish is perfectly acceptable too).

    Fettuccini Alfredo

    Fancy Mac and Cheese :-)

You can do chicken or a pasta w/o meat. Most people enjoy pasta.

A vegetarian option is always good to have for people with dietary restrictions. We're doing polenta cakes in a ragu so it tastes like a pasta but is gluten free. Apparantely quite a few people can't eat gluten now either.

So half my message was deleted some how.

In the Original post I had put a pasta choice, or a salad selection (with multiple topping)

As Paris stated, Eggplant parm. would be nice, or a pasta bar, where they can choose red sauce, Alfredo, etc

No problems, and I think MrsK is being a guest-zilla about the fish. Fish and vegetarian, or even just vegetarian, should be plenty. If a guest has allergies, it's his or her responsibility to let you know about it way in advance.

I don't so much think I am being a "guest-zilla", I was just stating a fact that some people don't like fish or are allergic to it... and if you are planning a Friday Wedding during Lent then those who are the hosts should be considerate to those who Practice No meat on Fridays.

I know of a few people who are allergic to certain food that we are planning on so I am making sure that everyone is happy at my wedding which I asked them to be a guest at.

I am trying to steer clear of seafood because of allergies!

I suggest pasta options or other vegatarian options!

Yes! I would think about having a buffet so there are options for people who do not eat meat. I'm sure when they RSVP they won't realize it's lent and may pick an entree with meat

A couple years ago my friend actually got married on Easter Saturday. Yes, they had a harder time finding someone to marry them, but they had no problem with people not coming to their wedding. This included a bunch of friends and family friends that are Catholic. They had a buffet dinner with different options, don't remember there being a fish option, but definitely there was meat, chicken and pasta.

If your wedding will be in a Catholic Church, keep in mind that there are many restrictions during Lent: you can't decorate very much and some priests want it to be more solemn than celabratory. The crucifixes may also be shrouded in purple cloths, too.
