Will an outdoor wedding reception in May be okay?

Amy, on August 8, 2016 at 9:53 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

We're getting married in Chapel Hill, NC. Do you think it will be comfortable for everyone?

I'm not from NC but I'm from KS and I'm having a fall wedding outside for the ceremony. My cousin had an April wedding in Texas outside and it was gorgeous. I'm sure yours will be perfect weather time. =)

I'm in VA and usually early May has tolerable weather. Usually it's the end of May when it gets super hot! I think you should be fine!

Eh...I wouldn't do it (I'm in Durham). The rain is unpredictable here in the summer and you're in full-blown allergy season. It's not terribly hot but it could be uncomfortable if there's no shade available.

Is there a chance, maybe an outdoor seating area for the cocktail hour instead of the whole ceremony? Weather makes me nervous! Good luck!

It's looks as if the avg. Temp that time of year is between 75° and 83° so you should be ok

I'm from NJ but currently living in NC, so am pretty unaccustomed to the weather in nc. For me, it would be a little rough since it is hotter and more humid than what I am used to, but I imagine for your regional guests an early May wedding would be comfortable.

As long as you have back-up plans for bad weather you should be fine. I live in CA with mostly perfect weather all of the time, so I have no idea what the weather is like in NC, but just plan for the worst and keep the comfort of your guests in mind!

I'm in the charlotte area and just make sure it's closer to the beginning of may and not the end. Most times late may is mid 80s. FMIL and i went looking at venues in middle of May and you couldn't have asked for a better day. Make sure you have a rain backup plan too. May is one of those unpredictable months.

I went to an outdoor wedding in Chapel Hill last June (it was freakishly hot that day), but you should be fine in May

I think it'll be fine. People on WeddingWire tend to be a little oversensitive about outdoor things. We are having an outdoor ceremony on a July evening, and then an indoor reception. If people choose only to come to the reception, that's fine. Adults can decide for themselves.

Yeah, we're oversensitive because we tend to think that guests and bridal parties shouldn't be sweating to death or frozen solid, no matter how great the photo opps.

The bottom line? It's impossible to predict. I've done late May weddings in NJ that have been freezing and late Sept weddings that have been sweltering. The only hospitable thing to do is to have an indoor plan and use it if it's uncomfortable outside.

I honestly don't understand it; you all put so much money, time, emotion, thought and glitter into these things and are willing to have everyone's enjoyment (including yours) pivot south because of weather. Insisting to be outside when it's hot and humid or cold and windy basically throws all your planning out the window. The ceremony is bad enough if it's uncomfortable, but the whole thing?

    No.

Were having ours May 7th in NC. I think it will be iffy with Rain but our reception is in a covered pavilion type thing. We toured the venue Memorial Day weekend and it was so hot and humid by then so I'm hoping it will be a perfect day.

We traveled to HHI for an outdoor wedding in May. It was absolutely gorgeous and everyone had a great time. Go for it!

As long as you have a backup plan for bad weather, I think it's fine. I'm doing an outdoor wedding in May in north GA in a covered patio.
