Why are veils so pricey?

Charlotte, on November 23, 2009 at 12:04 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

I'm looking at spending no more than $200 for my dress. Why do veils cost almost if not more than that? Even the really simple ones are like $100. They're beautiful, don't get me wrong. I just don't understand why they cost so much. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, I don't know. I'm looking for about elbow length or a little shorter for a "traditional" one (I'm planning on wearing it under my updo) and I like the style of the bird cage one, but not sure if it would look right with my dress:

Nope, you're fine...i feel the same way! heck, there's nowhere near as much fabric as a dress has, and even if it's hand sewn, i know damned well they didn't spin the tulle by hand! haha! it's crazy! i thought about a birdcage, but i'm just having my hair swept back, like the "war bride" style, so i'm not doing anything in my hair. maybe a fascinator? the flower thingy? but idk, and right now, it's just my hair, and some old fashioned pearl combs!

I only said not to get irritated because I've seen other post questions like this and some vendors come off snotty and almost with a "How DARE you ask that!" vibe. LoL. Not all but I have seen it in the past.

The veil that was picked out to match my dress isn't on the DB website. I have searched the number and can't find it anywhere online so I am searching for a similar one on ebay instead. There are some great finds on there and a huge variety.

You may want to keep in mind that the seamstress that alters your dress will be able to make a veil for you, and possibly match the pattern on your dress. Mine did my veil for about $20, and it was beautiful!

I've heard several people who got their veils online and were completely satisfied with them. Just look into the return policy of the online store before you order, that way you know up front what is necessary if you decide you want to return it. This site is one that I've heard a few brides have ordered theirs from, they start at like $20 and will likely be where I order mine from.

They are so pricey because just like everything else associated with the wedding industry, the prices are inflated b/c they expect that women will pay top dollar to have their dream wedding. But some places will throw in a free veil with your gown purchase or offer a discount. For example, dori anne veils offers 50% off the headpiece if you purchase your gown from them. Just look around and you'll find a good bargain. Also check ebay, craigslist and any number of sites dedicated to selling pre-owned wedding items.

Wedding-veil.com is great (and i echo Knoichiwa's warning about the return poilcy). also, try bravobride.com to see if bride's are re-selling their veils for a portion of the cost they paid.

I love bird cage veils!!! My wedding last month I wore a custom design made by a great vendor on etsy. The fasinator (flower) and veil total cost me $75! Check out her work at http://www.etsy.com/shop/tessakim

If you would like to see my heapiece I would be happy to email you a pic! Etsy has tons of other custom veil makers as well.

    Good luck!

I'm not a seamstress, but I've sewn enough to know that special occasion fabrics are a pain to work with. It takes a great deal of skill to make a veil without showing stictchwork and infrastructure. I'm guessing that's the reason

I totally understand the tradition of the viel, but I also do not get why they're expensive, I know ones have lace, and some ae a million miles long, so yes, those ones will be pricey..I don't do viels, tried on one with the dress..NO GO! I had it one for like a nila-second..

I thought the same thing until I started making them. The Bridal Illusion I work with is very unforgiving - one little rough spot on your skin or a nail with a rough edge will trash a veil in a heartbeat and there is nothing you can do to fix it. Annoying when you are doing a veil with a cut edge; a disaster when you have just spent 3 hours putting lace or beading on it. Some lower end tulle is easier to work with and not as delicate (the cheaper veils use this).

Trims also have a lot to do with it -laces are VERY expensive. I use 100% silk ribbon and silk thread on all my pencil edge veils.

The Bird Cage veils so popular now are made using either Russian (less expensive) or French veiling. MY cost on the French veiling is $10 yard and it's only 12" wide.

Each bride is unique - some want a veil just to have a veil or to make Mom happy others want an heirloom veil to pass down to a daughter, granddaughter or other family member or friend.

Hope this helps clarify a little.

You will find great veils at great prices (starting from $30 & up for the ones "on sale") at www.forprincessbride.com ! There are also "bird cage" or "French" veils available in addition to traditional ones, and they are super-gorgeous and less than $60, plus you get a gift with every purchase! Veils are less expensive on-line than in-store, because on-line retailers generally don't have to pay huge rents and overhead expenses of a storefront boutique. That explains the cost of in-store veils. Good luck to you!

I can't even imagine paying that much for a veil. I paid $12.95 for mine. Fingertip, pencil edge, already attached to the comb and beautiful.

Check out your local buy and sell website. I bought my cathedral length veil with crystals from craigslist for $60, the bride I bought it from paid 300 for it.
