Whole Foods?

Amanda, on August 8, 2016 at 7:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 54

I am quite possibly on the verge of an anxiety attack because shit keeps adding up even though I cut back everything. So I'm basically obsessing on how to cut costs as much as reasonably possible for our wedding next April. I already cut our alcohol tab in half (saved 2K), axed guests from our already cut-throat list, done a butt-load of DIY with items given to me for free or next to it. I've bought almost all our decor second-hand, my dress with accessories and alterations will run me about $800 total, I'm doing basic-ass centerpieces, my grandma wants to make our wedding cake - but she has migraine induced vertigo and that's affected her ability to bake lately, AND we are doing our own DJ. This shit is CHEAP.

What is your experience with Whole Foods for flowers, bouquets, and possibly wedding cakes?? I have a woman on Etsy who can do crepe paper bouquets at $35 a piece and they look STUNNING, but I also saw where WF will do bridal bouquets for $60.

Help me before I lose my shit

I've hear good things about their flowers. You might also check Sam's and Costco, whether you do your own flowers or order their wedding packages. Both have good quality flowers. I know nothing about Whole Paychecks cakes. If you are near a Publix, however, their cakes are delicious.

Don't have your poor grandmother make your cake. Worry more about her health than her ability to bake you a wedding cake just to save money.

ETA: I can't find the words to fully express my disgust with the phrase "she has migraine induced vertigo and that's affected her craftsmanship lately". Ew.

I can't imagine budget friendly and Whole Foods in the same sentence. I believe people have discussed buying flowers from Costco with fair results. I would suggest searching for those threads.

Im not sure about whole foods and somehow doubt they're particularly budget friendly compared to similar quality flowers, however ive heard good things about wegmans and harris teeter floral departments.

@Going to the chapel: a Publix is actually opening here in town in a few weeks, I've heard great things about them as a store but I will definitely have to check their bakery out. Thanks!

I would look into Costco! Some florists also sell bulk flower DIY kits.

Family members should not be put to work. Your OP makes you sound like a brat who is using their grandmother to make a cake instead of spending money on one. I stand by my comment.

You also can't tell me to leave.

Definitely check out Costco for flowers- they can order pretty much whatever flower you want. Cakes whole foods would be great! Maybe even look at doing just a small cake for you and your husband, and cookies or similar for the guests.

@taco Cat- why do you think I'm researching other cake options? I don't WANT my grandmother to push herself to make our cake. I don't want her to feel like she has to. We've preferred she not this entire time. If you take my post as me being more concerned about a cake than my grandmother's general health, you're sorely mistaken. I've take her to her appointments at Duke, gone to her house when she hasn't been able to leave the house in weeks and helped her in any way I can. Don't question my relationship or concern for my grandmother. She's one of the brightest parts of my life.

Don't get a cake for you and FH and then not serve cake to everyone else. That's rude. You can, however, order sheet cakes for the guests rather than a large wedding cake which can be expensive.

Then why even mention it? You say you hope she'll make your cake, and then you say you don't want her to.

Your words "my grandma is (hopefully) making our wedding cake"

I can't read that any other way than you wanting her to make your cake.... Even though she is sick.

Take a breathe. I have been there. When you realize that your dream wedding is not affordable it's frustrating and disappointing. It seems like you have been doing a great job of making cuts where you can to have a wedding you can afford. We will be doing Sams club flowers to save some money. My plan is to keep it simple with our arrangements.

Costco will be more cost effective than whole foods for flowers, unless you're concerned about the source of the flowers.

Not even going to touch the grandmother thing, but OP maybe you should re-read your first post because LindseyO was not the only one who read your post the way she did. It was the wording along with the context of the rest of the post.

ETA: Just saw the adjustment. MUCH better!

I'm sorry your grandmothers health has taken a turn, and I truly hope she can contribute the way she wants to. If it comes down to needing one from somewhere else, I don't know how much WF cakes cost, but along with other grocery store cake decorators the skill level won't be as universally high as a professional bakery.

Because that's what SHE wants. I want my grandmother to be happy and if making our wedding cake will do that, then why not let her attempt? I couldn't care less if we even have cake, my FH HATES cake (he's obviously insane), I dig cake-pops but cakes are HER thing.

It's just what she's always done, for every wedding in our family. Everyone has just let her because it's her way of giving us something with 'meaning' behind it.

Funny story, last year she made a 3 tier cake for a family friend and for the first time in 40 years, she 'lost' the cake. She was SO mad and tried her best to fix it but she got herself so worked up; it just kept getting worse. So the people just shoved a big hydrangea on the top of the cake and nobody knew that the other part of the cake had totally fallen right off.

I went to a wedding where they got the bouquets from Whole Foods. They looked very nice. I think they were more reasonably priced than a typical florists. If you are only doing a few bouquets and not using flowers for centerpieces, then Whole Foods might be the better options than Costco since you don't really have the need for a very large amount of flowers.

I found some feedback about WF flowers on the weddingbee forums. Everyone had positive things to say, and said they were a fraction of a florist (you have to consider that they don't have the overhead a small business does).

I stopped into one by my wedding venue recently...the girl at the counter said they'll do everything: centerpieces, bouquets, etc. I didn't show her anything I had in mind to get an idea of pricing, but she said I'd have to come back closer to the wedding (I'm a bit less than a year out) to place my order, see what flowers are available, and get market pricing. She said they'd also deliver them for a fee.
