Who has experience with tanzanite rings?

Sandra, on September 7, 2012 at 1:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Hello Brides! We are thinking about my engagement ring (He did not buy it before coz we are in a long distance relationship) We started to see options and I fell in love with tanzanite rings, the colour is just unique and more meaningfull for me than a simple diamond. Nevertheless I have read on internet, tanzanite gems are kind of soft and some people do not recommend it for a daily use ring. Does somebody here have a feedback about it? Thank you!!

I don't have a ring, but I do have a tanzanite necklace that i've had for about 9 years. I wear it everyday and nothing has happened yet. But then again if it on your figure I'm not sure.

Why is tanzanite more meaningful? Is it the colour, or the actual stone? Because sapphire has a similar colour but is more sturdy...

I have a tanzanite ring - marquise cut - that my dad got for me in November 2008. I've worn it pretty much every day since, and it still is fine! There are some care items that you should look up, but nothing that difficult. I'd say it's fine!

I love sapphires, also tanzanite is harder to find from what I understand and is usually expensive.

I would look up what can happen to them, i know they say certain cleaners turn diamonds hazy or yellow, thers a downfall to all stones, maybe talk to a jeweler

If you're paying $$$ for a tanzanite, make sure you're getting a real one. There are imitations. A good jeweler should know the difference.

@ Judith aka Polka Dot Queen: The meaning is: Tanzanites help to balance mind and heart, (my FH and I always talk about he is the brain and I am the heart over here), calm overactive minds. Also, my fav colour is blue and his is purple and tanzanites have a mix of both... you know when you are in love all those silly things are important!! LOL. I love the fact they come from Africa and I have special feelings for that Continent. You girls are right, the best option is getting an expert opinion OR look for a saphire which is lovely also.

@ VNGB: My problem is I am very clumsy with my hands I am sure I will hit the poor ring a lot!!

I worked as a jewelry manager for many years so I have quite a bit of experience with tanzanite. Tanzanite quickly became one of my favorite stones because of its color. Like Tynisha, I've had a piece of tanzanite for many years. I had a ring I wore everyday for about 5 years and never had any issues with it whatsoever. Tanzanite is an average strength stone. It isn't as soft as an emerald but it isn't as strong as a sapphire or ruby. Be careful cleaning it though .. don't put it in an ultrasonic cleaner because it can cause the stone to crack.

Stones that are deeper blue or purple will run a little bit more expensive because they are a better quality stone. When you are shopping for a ring pay attention to the price if you are shopping at a store that isn't a chain such as Kay's or Zales. There are people who try to pass off glass or zirconia as the real thing. If the price seems too good to be true it probably is. A carat runs about $1200 right now so keep that in mind. Also .. cont

Check the colors of the stone. If it doesn't flash all sorts of blue or purple hues then it is more than likely fake. A fake stone with only flash one color; a genuine stone will show several hues.

    Hopefully I helped out some!

Thank you so much Amy A. and Lori C. Your tips are very very helpfull. Now I feel more convinced about my "meaningfull tanzanite ring" hihihi. Here in Curacao there are a few non chain stores but we do have two very good ones. I did see the differences in the colours. Will keep you gilrs posted about our choice. Good luck with your plans there!

My SIL has tanzanite in her wedding st. It is absolutely beautiful. Her ring is a 2 carat princess cut diamond with several nicely sized purple tanzanite stones on each side. She has been married to my brother for about 10 years now and never takes her rings off. She has never had any trouble with her stones and the ring is still gorgeous after all these years.

My engagement ring is tanzanite (1.22 carats) and I love it. It also has a total of 60 diamonds (ranging from 1mm to 1.45mm) in the setting.

Edited to add: I also have a small tanzanite ring on my right hand that I've had for about a decade and haven't had any issues. I rarely, if ever, take that particular ring off. I do take my e-ring off frequently.

WOW...Tanzanites are gorgeous, but I would not recommend one for everyday wear like a wedding ring. They have a tendancy to crack and chip quite easily and very expensive to replace if lost. Before you invest in a tanzanite and diamond ring, speak with a Gemologist..not just any one..but one with experience with delicate gemstones..I am sure he will agree with me. I would look into sapphires..they are the hardest gemstones around next to rubies..and they are less expensive and give the same clarity . Stay away from"black colored" sapphires..those are usually commercial quality and very cheap.

I have had experience with jewelry and gemstones....the lighter the quality of tanzanite..the less value..the darker, depth of color, cut and clarity, very expensive stones. Yes, they are delicate, and they all chip easily..I haven't seen a fake one yet..only an experience jeweler can tell...and get an appraisal in writing for insurance purposes!!! You will want one always on Tanzanite..good luck..I never wear mine to work...

There's one teeny tiny scratch on it (you can't see it unless it's like right next to your eye or under a microscope). I was told that tanzanites can be "resurfaced" to fix that though.

Edited to add - I have worn mine while working out at the gym lifting weights and doing cardio and such without issue. Not necessarily by choice because I do take it off all the time, but because I had previously sprained my ring finger (how random!) and my finger swelled so I couldn't get it off.

I was reading reviews on how beautiful Tanzanite rings were I had to check for myself. So I ordered 5 different stone colors. I was surprised at how well they were made. I have had no problems with stones falling out. I wear them almost everyday and I am constantly cleaning the ring. I work for a steel manufacturer and I knew the 316L stainless would be quite durable, but I had no idea that it would keep it's shine even after many hand washings. I can recommend these rings to anyone. They are really gorgeous. I like this Tanzanite Ring here www.ringsforwomen.org/rings/tanzanite-rings/
