White vs ivory .. pictures please!

Helen, on June 6, 2019 at 12:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 35
Hello everyone!

I am am getting close to making a final decision on a dress!
I always thought I wanted a white dress until all the dresses I tried on were ivory. I do like the ivory, but I still think I want white. However, I am yet to see a dress in white! All the shops I’ve been to don’t have any sample dresses in white.
I am a very visual person and cannot envision the difference.
To all the brides who bought a WHITE dress. Pleaseeee show me your pictures!

I bought a white dress but then online it didn't seem completely white like paper it felt a bit off white however it was ridiculously white in person. Maybe you can bring a piece of paper to your shopping trips or wear something you think is the white you like and compare the dress colors to that

Pictured below is basically the difference. I have an antique and Ivory dress, and I always wanted white. But I loved the way the dress looked so much when I tried it on, that I ended up deciding to keep it the same color. The only issue with ivory though, is that you have to be careful of having white elements in your wedding (flowers, grooms shirts, flower girl dresses, etc.) because the white tends to make an ivory wedding dress look a little "dirty" (for lack of a better word) when next to each other. For example, a friend of mine had an ivory dress, and all of the groom & groomsmen wore white button up shirts (no jacket or vest). Her dress looked "off" in pictures next to all of that white.

I would disagree with this. I had an ivory dress and my husband had a white shirt and I don’t think my dress looked off or dirty in pictures.

Not always, my dress was technically ivory and my husband wore a white shirt/vest and they matched perfectly fine. There are some dresses that are more antique than others, but to the naked eye ivory doesn't always look "dirty" next to pure white. I also didn't want pure white because I had a winter wedding and knew I'd be a little pale. The ivory complimented my skin tone rather than making me look washed out.

When we went shopping for my sister, she said she wanted white and had tried on ivory. We would not have been able to tell it wasn’t white unless the consultant said something. When holding it next to a white dress, the white was very blinding. Like too white, if that’s possible.

I used the word "dirty" for lack of a better word. Your HB is wearing a jacket, so the difference isn't as noticeable. Your pics are very pretty. And I wasn't saying that will happen in all situations, I was just stating it's possible. I'm wearing an ivory dress, and all of the men will have white shirts (and vests). But this is my friend in her ivory dress, and men in white...you can definitely see the difference. That is why I was just saying that it's something to be aware of. I guess, yellowish might be a better word, I dunno...maybe just off, lol.

A LOT of ivories are pretty much white. I would search for another store where you can see one in white. It was really shocking to me- it looked almost blue. The one Brianna posted above is definitely a wayyyyyy nicer white than the one I saw. Much softer. I think it might depend on the dress!

I think that might be a champagne dress with an ivory lace overlay. I've never seen an ivory dress that dark.

This is my dress. To me, it looks white? But the color is "ivory" when I ordered it. Technically my veil is "ivory" too. I think it depends on each designer.

Yeah, I guess it could be. I didn't think of that, because she just said it was ivory, lol.

I definitely wouldn't rule out a dress just because the tag says ivory! Mine looks white to me but technically its ivory. Terrible lighting

Yeah my husband kept his jacket on all night so I don’t have any other pictures to compare. But that dress doesn’t look ivory to me at all! I tried on my dress in champagne at the store and that’s what it looked like.

I agree with this. I’ve never seen a regular ivory dress that dark. That looks like champagne or candlelight. Typical ivory is usually very very close to white. This is my ivory dress and I’d never know it wasn’t white. The difference is very subtle.

Pure white is usually too harsh and can look almost blue in pictures. Bridal ivory usually looks white and comes across as a soft white in pictures. Here is a pic of me wearing an ivory silk chiffon dress and my flower girls wearing pure white dresses.

I was thinking it was champagne too.
To the OP — most bridal ivory really looks white , just, muted a bit , as true bright whites tend to look harsh with many skin tones, and most wedding dresses that LOOK ivory tend to actually be more of a “champagne” or “moscato”

my dress was officially “ivory” ...or really an “ivory gown with ivory lace over a moscato underlay” but, it LOOKED white to me , and except in the technicalities of a question like this, I’d never describe it as anything other than white, even though it technically was

When I went to buy my dress I thought it was white, it's listed as ivory. You'd only ever know if you held it up against the white version of the dress.
That being said what designers call ivory varies wildly, I've seen ivory that looks brown, nude, champagne, and yellow. Ivory really doesn't have a set color.
