white gold rings--how often do you replate them and how much is it?

kahlcara, on December 29, 2013 at 3:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Hi guys, my e-ring's at Kay Jewelers to be redipped, the last time it was there was in June. It was definitely due to be done, the yellow gold was showing through, and they charge me $60 each time. I'm wondering if other places do a better job (so it can go longer) or charge less? If it keeps on at this rate, in a couple years, I will have spent more on the replating than DH did on the ring, which seems a little ridiculous.

I have a lifetime warranty on my ring and all the re-dips are included. I have had my ring about 14 months and it hasn't needed to be dipped yet.

ETA - mine is from Zales

I got mine from international diamond center and they charge $30. I went 6 months and needed it done. It's been 6 months and after this last dip I don't need it done yet.

DH ordered both my rings from online jewelers, so I don't have a warranty that covers it. it just seems like a lot to be spending at least $120/yr on my e-ring, plus whenever my wedding band has to be redone.. I'm hoping that one will be less often because its 10K instead of 14K gold.

@kahlcara both mine and DH rings are from Kay's and we yet had it re dipped I had mine for 21 months now and had it cleaned a few times. Maybe you guys can look into purchasing the protection plan through Kay's so that you won't come out of pocket in the future. We both have insurance and the Kay's protection plan on our rings which helped us greatly. Good luck

@ All Smiles, thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of that. I will ask the store when I go pick it up.

He got my e-ring from Kay's with the lifetime warranty. I've never even heard of having it re-dipped! I will have to check our paperwork and make sure that is included.

I've had my ring for a year and I've never had to have it re-dipped. I'll probably do it voluntarily before our wedding just so that it'll be nice and shiny for the big day. But, like some of the others, my FH got a lifetime warranty with mine so we won't ever have to pay out of pocket for it.

Definitely look into a warranty! I got engaged in January 2011 & had it redipped in late August 2012 (right before our wedding so it would look as shiny as my band haha). I haven't had it done since, but I need to! It's not yellow or anything, but it is starting to look dingy-ish/dirty sort of :/. Mine set is from Daniel's if that makes a difference.

I've had my e-ring from February 2011 so maybe that's why? It seems like it wears faster now that it's older.. I never had it redipped until June of this year.

Are you sure the rings are white gold? I have never heard of this. My white gold rings are white gold--meaning they are gold but have some other alloy in them to make them the silverish color. No redip required. Are you sure it's not sterling over gold or something like that?

@LivelyBride - yes I am sure it's white gold. The alloys make it less yellow and more dull. The white color actually comes from rhodium plating that is applied to ALL white gold. This is what need to be "dipped."

"The properties of white gold, including its color, depend on its composition. Although most people think white gold is a shiny white metal, that color is actually from the rhodium metal plating that is applied to all white gold jewelry. Without the rhodium coating, white gold might be gray, dull brown, or even pale pink."

How long does it take? do you have to leave your ring? My ring came from a store in NY in the Diamond District. I don't want to send it via mail (I will if I have too) but I don't want to leave my ring at any other store. Is it something you can wait for?

We got my wedding band at Jared last night, and we paid $109 for lifetime insurance. This includes dipping as needed, inspections every 6 months, and replacement of any of the diamonds for the lifetime of the ring.

@ WeddingDestinationItaly, it might depend on the jeweler. Kay has to send it out, so it's gone for 7-10 business days. I haven't taken it anywhere else (I was going to try Hannoush but it turns out we don't have them near me).

We got my ring at Kay Jewelers and it came with a lifetime warranty -cleaning, re-dipping, stone setting or replacement and son on. You should see if they can offer you a similar plan at your Kay Jewelers. Good luck!

I've had my white gold ring for 5 years or so (gift from my dad). It's never been re-dipped. It's like maintenance-free silver.
