Which bridesmaid, unreliable best friend or reliable friend?

JaymeeP, on August 9, 2023 at 11:11 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 2

Firstly, congratulations to all the recently married or about to be married couples out there. Excited to join this community and share this exciting time with you all Smiley smile

I'm down to choosing my last bridesmaid but I am having a hard time deciding. There is two people I have in mind for the last bridesmaid spot but I have been going back and forth for the last month. Basically one of them is a close friend who I have known for decades. We have been through so much together over the years, travelling, school, countless nights out. During my young adulthood she was my fun friend and we were irresponsibile together. However, over the last few years I've really matured and settled down. She is still the same. I really worry about this persons reliability. They are always late, does not follow through with what they say they will do ever and is really hard to trust with any big responsibility. They are also a flight risk financially as she is a bit reckless with her money and has cancelled some recent meetups over lack of money. A good friend but a very immature one.

On the other hand I have another friend who I am not as close with and haven't shared anywhere near the past of the other person, but she is is very mature and very responsible. We don't see each other often but whenver we do we always have a nice time.

I definitely want to include one of them. Which one is the question.

Do I go with the closer friend who I have had many memories with but is unreliable or the reliable friend who is just a friend? My heart says the closer friend as we have been through a lot together. But my my mind says the reliable friend as they can be trusted more and probably won't cause me any stress leading upto the big day. Help me please!

Thank you!

Why not include both at this point? Sides don't have to be even.

Also bear in mind there's not really anything needing doing other than obviously show up a the wedding in the appropriate attire. So if you keep expectations low, they're less likely to disappoint you.

I agree with Jacks. Just ask both of them! As long as your “unreliable” friend will communicate enough to coordinate with you on getting her dress and she’ll be on time to get ready the day of (even then, if they want to do hair and makeup with you, for example, you can give her one of the later times lots so if she’s late she’ll still make it in time), there’s not much else she’s required to do. If you do feel like any of her behavior is really going to cause you stress or be less than supportive on your wedding day, however, then maybe don’t ask because asking her to step down later will likely ruin your friendship. It doesn’t sound like that’s the case, though, and you’re really just worried about numbers which you don’t have to be.
