Where to go for our honeymoon

Allaura, on December 8, 2021 at 11:27 AM Posted in Honeymoon 1 17
So I originally thought we were going to skip a honeymoon. But my fiancé has recently said he wants to go on one right after the wedding. So where should we go? I have zero thoughts about where to go. He likes to fish. He says Mexico but I honestly think that’s played out. So any suggestions?

You said he likes to fish, so maybe somewhere like Hawaii or Puerto Rico or even a small town somewhere in a nearby state with a lake that you can rent a cabin on? You could also do a camping trip as a honeymoon.

Canada is absolutely gorgeous, has a ton of stuff to do, and would provide beautiful scenery for a day of fishing.

Belize is incredible. American dollars go twice as far. It's tropical, they speak English too. I've been twice so far and can't stop! There's snorkeling on the second largest reef in the world, island hopping, exploring Mayan ruins, caving, kayaking, and I've even tried riding horseback to the ruins! You can always do a day trip as well to Tikal, in Guatemala. It's worth it.

I will echo that Belize is beautiful! I would also advise serious caution if contemplating traveling there nowadays; as their crime rate has skyrocketed (specifically violent crimes and murders). Robberies, assault and rape against tourists has been on the rise. I would suggest doing lots of research on areas that are most safe for tourists. And if you decide to go to Belize, be sure to not wear any jewelry or carry expensive bags or wear expensive clothing, as it makes you more susceptible to robberies. Also, make sure you do not drink too much, as many criminals their prey upon intoxicated tourists.

Most of that crime happens in Belize City, which is boring to me. I only used it for the airport. I had no problems or sketchy moments at all in the places I traveled across the country and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I had no idea it was developing a bad rep. That's all the stuff I hear about Mexico!

Yeah, unfortunately it has become even worse than Mexico in a lot of ways. I believe their most recent murder statistics per population show it is 91% higher than Mexico! We have friends that operate a traveling photography group and they travel with groups all over the globe. They used to love going to Belize, but they’ve stopped going there completely now that the violent crime there (especially the huge increase of crime against tourists) has sky rocketed. He said on their last trip there, every night they heard gun fire 😱

When is your wedding? I would base it off of the month you will be traveling, the activities that sound exciting for the both of you, and the climate you would like to be in. We changed our honeymoon destination 3 TIMES and ultimately decided to stay in the states over fear of covid and getting stuck somewhere before Christmas. But I think after some thought and some research, you will come up with something great!

Maybe Tennessee or somewhere near there, tons of fun fishing locales.

In terms of Mexico being “played out”, it doesn’t matter where other people have gone, I promise your honeymoon will be special to you because it’ll be YOUR honeymoon.
That being said, when are you looking to go? You can fish at some pretty spectacular places in the US or internationally, but a lot of it is weather dependent.

I’ve just seen way to many pictures of Mexico and Hawaii and would rather have a unique experience. I really don’t care what people think I just don’t want to have the same pictures and experience as everyone else. Just the way I want it.

To answer the part of this comment that could potentially be helpful, we are planing to go in November 2022.

There’s no reason to be defensive and snippy (“just the way you want it” “potentially be helpful”) when you’re asking people for advice.
Some ideas: Banff. The Seychelles. Islamorada. Anywhere in Portugal.
Not sure if any of those fit your wish for “not played out, but hope they spark something for you!

Obviously doesn’t sound like what you’d want but we’re planning to go to Finland a year after we get married to see the northern lights

My fiance and I decided on somewhere quiet and relaxing for our honeymoon. We will have just started full time jobs as RNs in early 2022, so I suggested a quiet honeymoon. We decided on a little coastal island near the Outer Banks that both of us love. It's familiar, but I have no doubt we will have fun exploring different areas together. Plus, we are renting an AirBnb which is super affordable!

I cannot recommend AirBnb enough. You can find some really cool houses and destinations (We are staying in a treehouse after our wedding!). They have locations everywhere and tend to be fairly reasonable. I don't know if you're looking for a more "all-inclusive" experience, but if you are I cannot help you there LOL

Fiance and I are thinking about Saint Lucia or Panama. I don't know anything about fishing though. I've always wanted to go to Costa Rica! I've heard great things! I was going to go in 2020, but the pandemic had other plans lol.
