When To Tip?

Madison, on July 29, 2019 at 3:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

Only 17 days away from my wedding and panic is starting to set in!

I was curious if any other brides had sent the tips for their vendors after the wedding along with a thank you card.

To clarify, I will be giving tips to all my vendors (photographer, makeup artist, etc), but most of my vendors are requesting to be paid in cash/envelopes the day of. I just feel weird setting aside the tip in an envelope before I've even had the service done. I just don't want to scramble the day of trying to reorganize money if one vendor goes above and beyond and I would like to tip them more, but another vendor might not meet my expectations, aka not get as big of a tip.

How has/is everyone else tipped their vendors?

I haven't had to tip any vendor yet but my advice would be to set aside your best guess for a tip and let someone else handle it the day of after your wedding is over or your vendors are leaving. You can have a quick chat with your assigned person if you feel that the tip needs to be adjusted at the end of the day but it isn't something you need to worry about!

We ended up tipping via mailed thank you cards , though it wasn’t our original plan (we had a wad of cash for tipping just didn’t give it out!)...I did make sure to touch base with the vendors and doublecheck I had mailing addresses so they knew they weren’t forgotten

We're tipping each of our servers and bartenders about $20 each; we'll get the final number of staff before the wedding. Our DJ refuses to take our money, but I may slip his wife the equivalent of their hotel room lol. The final cost of our photographer is $1250, so we may bump it up to an even $1300.

Our other vendors such as baker, rentals, and florist aren't sticking around for the night, just quick drop offs. We're going to write them thank yous after the wedding.

Yes, I did this and I recommend it. Back when I joined WW in early 2017 this was the standard advice on this forum which is where I learned it. This way you are able to think about each vendor's service and tip accordingly after the wedding is over.
