When to start planning?

How soon after your engagement did you start planning? Picking a date, venue, guest number, etc. My fiancé’s proposal to me was straight out of a romance movie. He is absolutely ecstatic to be my husband but gets annoyed when I bring up planning stuff? He says let’s just enjoy being engaged.

I got my dress a week to the day after.

But we also got engaged and married within 8 months, so.

I knew I wanted a fall wedding and did not want to wait over a year to get married. I got engaged in November of 2018 and began doing research immediately and actually started planning about 2 weeks later.

The next day ha. My husband let me know the morning after he proposed that he wanted as short an engagement as possible, so we picked a location (destination wedding in a city) and I emailed potential venues that afternoon.

After we got engaged I started looking at venues that I thought I we would like. Then a month later we started viewing the venues I had researched. We really liked one but we wanted to be sure before making a decision. It wasn’t until a year later when we booked.

However my fiancé did give me a hard time at the beginning since he wanted a 2 year engagement. Eventually he just entertained me.

Congrats! Enjoy it! No rush to be married to your forever! We got engaged in June 2019 and didn't talk or look at venues till about September. Talk about wants in your big day and enjoy it together!

My fiancé and I discussed marriage before we were even engaged, so when we finally were I started planning right away. I had venue tours scheduled within a week. But I know people who have been engaged for years and are happy to be. It really is different for everyone and worth discussing so you can be on the same page.

I found out he bought the ring, and couldn't keep it quiet so I told him. He knows I know and we have already started planning even though he hasn't actually formally "proposed." He said he would go look at venues and we agreed on a date.

Congratulations!! We started planning right after the proposal, but we have slowed our momentum a bit now. We know there is lots to still do, but things keep changing with Covid and restrictions, etc. We are hopeful we will get to continue with our original wedding date.

He proposed on December 23, 2018. About 5 days later, I started going into psycho planning mode. The wedding is October 2021, but I'm REALLY glad I got an early start on things, now that there's 350 days left, literally about 80% of my To-Do list is done, the rest is very minor and simple.

I say it's never too early to start planning! I gave my fiance a few things on the list to be responsible for, and they're pretty significant things, because his input is important to me, it's his wedding, too. So I gave him the job of choosing the cake, the wedding rings, and getting the videographer. Whatever design he chooses for the cake will be a surprise to me, and he has very good taste and an artistic eye, so I'm very excited to see the rings, but that will be a surprise, too.
His main job during the whole planning process has been to chill me out and rip the notebook away from me once in a while so I don't go totally off-the-charts getting bogged down in planning frenzy. LOL

Good lord, my fiancé and I went and toured a venue the same week we got engaged. Maybe just ask him straight up when he thinks would be the appropriate time to start planning. He might just have other ideas. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Maybe he wants to wait a few weeks.

My thing is, the more you do early on, the more stress you will save yourself from later on. Just a thought.

Update: so I think he just needed a little bit to sink in the engagement! We have been having so much fun deciding on colors, location, etc! When we found out we were pregnant he acted weird for two days and then came home with a bunch of baby clothes. Men are weird! 😂

That’s a really good point. I have done most of the planning for our wedding. My Fiancé is a farmer, so it has been a bit challenging to get him to the city to try out suits and such. I ordered his ring online, and I have done a lot of stuff just by sending him photos and having him choose from several options that I liked. Congratulations to you, happy wedding planning!
