When to send invites for a destination wedding

Marsha, on March 23, 2017 at 7:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

I am having my wedding in Mexico in December when should invites go out? How much time should I give people to RSVP?

Do you have a hotel room block? I'd make sure people get invitations before the room block expires.

For my DW, room block expires in Feb and I'm sending invites 8-10 weeks before that.

We did save the dates at 10 months out to give guests a heads up. Invitations at 8 weeks with RSVPs due at 4 weeks.

I'm sending my invites out next month for our April 2018 wedding in Jamaica. There is a rsvp date of feb 1 2018, we have until I believe mid feb to release any rooms that aren't booked from our block. I'm sure I'm early compared to other brides, but I wanted to make sure our guests had enough time to plan and they knew the pricing sooner rather than later.

CEH15 you may want to re think sending your invites out so early. People will lose them or forget about it. I wouldn't be able to hold onto a rsvp card for a year

I did things a little differently for my crowd. We sent out invitations for our DW a year in advance. I just really wanted everyone to know way ahead of time so they'd have time to save & make arrangements.

In December we mailed out what looked like STDs ,but they were gentle reminders for everyone who planned to attend to pay their initial room deposits by the deadline.

Hey thanks everyone. We sent our STD in feb we got engaged in dec most people already starting putting down their deposits and paying for their rooms. I do have 25 rooms blocked. 11 rooms are already booked. Since it's a DW in dec I was thinking to send invites in May and have the RSVP dates for last wk in Sept. But is that too much time to give ppl to RSVP?

You should be sending save the dates now. Invites go out 6-8 weeks prior to wedding.

Cabo Bride don't send invitations out in December for your May wedding. That's crazy. Save the dates will suffice.

    I ordered mine today.

    I'm sending them mid June.

RSVP date is July 15, 2017.

    Wedding is Sept 16,2017.

It's earlier than most. Our room block expires six weeks before our ceremony so I'm having the rsvps due 8 weeks before.

It's probably not the right thing to do now that I'm typing it out lol.

Yes sorry. Destination wedding in Vegas. My family is from Chicago.

I just figure if I was going to a destination wedding as a guest I wouldn't be deciding last minute anyways.

We aren't doing rsvp cards. I understand everyones concern, but we are doing a super small wedding so all of the guests know of the date, destination and prices for the most part. The invite will have our wedding website and booking info and how to rsvp. If guests lose the invite then we can resend the link and all info that they need.

Sorry guys, but I think it's rude to ask guests to RSVP months ahead of time. Don't do that. It's not good etiquette. Destination wedding or not, people shouldn't have to plan their lives three months ahead of time. A lot of jobs won't even tell you if you can get the time off until a month before. Also, I can buy perfectly good tickets to Vegas 2 or 3 weeks prior to the trip and if the hotel block fills, then tough on me and I have to find my own hotel. This is what save the dates are for. Don't be rude because you want to cheap out on save the dates.

Send them asap! Be courteous and give your guests plenty of time to make travel arrangements.

For our DW, we sent our STDs around 6-7 months out (can't quite remember!) Invitations were mailed at 10 weeks with RSVPs due at 6 weeks. I initially was going to shoot for a 4 week deadline, but I had a feeling we would have those "late responses", so I decided for push it up to 6 weeks so I didn't have to bug them right away.

Many responded as soon as they received the invitation! There are those who may not respond "on time" so after 1-2weeks past the due date, have your MOH chase down those remaining and her gently remind them of the RSVP deadline. It helps soo much to have someone other than yourself do this!

This is an insane response given that most DW locations require final counts 60 days before the wedding.

For a DW, people will know by at least 3 months out if they are coming or not, probably sooner. Please don't lecture me on etiquette, the 4-6 week rule will not work for everyone's wedding situation. For our DW, we are sending out invites 3.5 months prior and asking for RSVPs 2.5 months prior. Most DW venues need 2 month's notice for attendees, anyway.

Well said! I find it crazy how opinionated people are over this topic. It makes it sound like if you don’t follow this 4-6 week rule, you’re selfish, awful & belong in prison! 😂 lolol

How did that work out? I never thought of that but our wedding is smaller so we want to be sure we can make the minimum for the one place and if not we will plan b for another
