When people ask questions but don't listen to the answer..

Quick back story: I'm from Saskatchewan & FH is from Texas. We live together in Oklahoma. We knew that the wedding would be here in OK because this is our home, this is where we're starting our life together.

The other day we got a text from FMIL saying "dad said you were looking at venues in Oklahoma City". We told her, yes we were looking around that area (about an hour and a half from where we live) because with so many people flying in we wanted to keep it close to the airport with lots of hotel options. We also told her we were keeping it in OK cause it's our home. Her response "what about doing it in Dallas?" FH said no, that's Texas. And then she told us about a beautiful place in Ft. worth that a friend got married at.

Why do people do this? We said no and explained why, so just leave it alone! Yes I realize this isn't the end of the world but I expect lots of this sort of thing from both of our sides. Anyone else run into things like this? Already married women: how did you do it!? Haha I'm worried that I will only be able to respond politely for so long.

Don't you love MIL's? Smiley smile I think everyone likes to put their opinions in...I have had to say no 100 times...initially it was hard it still is not easy because you don't want to offend anyone...but the more you stick to it and say no...the more likely they are to get it. UGH

That must be what's more convenient for her. She probably just came from that wedding and said, "Oh, the venue was lovely, and it's near my house, so maybe they'd get married here." Just continue on with your plans.

You just have to stand firm, and have a go-to response. "I appreciate your input, but we've settled on Oklahoma as our wedding site." The problem is that if you give reasons, pushy people will see that as an opening to try and change your mind:

"We want Oklahoma because of XYZ."

"Well, if you move it to Texas, here's how we can take care of X, Y, and Z! Problem solved! The wedding will be in Texas!"

So I would just stop giving reasons. "No" is a complete sentence.

Thank you ladies! I feel better know that it's okay to say "no" ... I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had to say it haha even this early in the planning game.

Speaking as someone who has a very pushy FMIL who asks me the same questions every two weeks (and has since August 2012!), my advice is to BREATHE and just stay strong! It's the only way to keep your sanity! Good luck!

    What rustic bride said.

as for leaving stuff alone, don't hold your breath. I think my groom is the only person in the world who can come close to really leaving anything alone, and even then he doesn't do a perfect job at it.

just roll with it. don't take it personally when she doesn't listen, my guess is she doesn't listen much of anyone.

I got married in my hometown because it just felt right to do so.

If you know you've made the right decision for both of you, then you have nothing to worry about.

My parents said that I should get married in NY because that was where I was raised. Never mind that it would inconvenience me and a lot of my guests who do not live in NY. You're going to face silly roadblocks in many steps of the process, and this is the first one. Chin up! You'll develop the spine and "bridal balls" soon enough!

My FMIL just keeps saying things like "I really wish you were getting married in a Catholic church" and "what if I just spoke to the priest at [FH's church]?" What she does not seem to understand is the fact that I am NOT Catholic and have no intention of becoming Catholic. No matter how many times FH and I tell her this, the comments just keep coming. I just ignore them and keep moving right along! Smiley smile

Been there. FH and I are both from Cleveland but now live in South Florida. When we first started talking wedding stuff with his mom she asked why we weren't getting married in Ohio. I asked her how I was supposed to plan a wedding from several states away and she said that I could have trusted her to help.

LOL! She has great taste but NO. I didn't need the added stress. She understood, thank goodness, and now she's looking forward to being here on a sort of mini vacay for the wedding.
