When is an appropriate time to get Engagement Photos?

I would wait until closer to time definitely. You'll be glad you did. But it's absolutely up to you. I got anxious to get pro pics done so I had a friend with a nice camera take some photos of us for Christmas cards. That eased my immediate desire for engagement pics... I was then able to hold off until April

I guess maybe wait like 6 months..although you can do whatever you want! we will be engaged like 13 months, and we got ours right away..we wanted to capture that first/early time in the engagement ya know? It really doesn't matter..just I guess if you are going to use them for STDs you want to look pretty similar to current to wedding, like people change somewhat in 2 years appearance-wise:-)

We are doing ours a year in advance. BUT, that's because 1) We want summery pictures 2) Our date is on a holiday weekend so we want to send STD's at least 6 months out, which puts us in March, which would mean we would have to get engagement pictures about January (which is NOT summer in MN). So I guess it depends on your situation too. If you want a certain season/how far in advance you're going to be sendnig STD's.

I do not see the problem getting the engagement photos done after you get engaged.

You can get engagement photos done anytime before you get married! There is no set time, it's entirely up to you and your heart's desire.

We got ours roughly in November ... because we wanted Fall pictures but ours turned out so bad ... but that's not because a dear friend of mine did them, it's because FS didn't shave, have a hair cut or anything ... he was kinda upset about the whole engagement pictures, he didn't want them I don't think ...

We are getting ours next month. We have some pics but most of them are by our camera phones and I would really like some nice one around the house.

Im getting mines done in june.. wedding isnt til june of next yr..im using these pics in my Save the date cards and sending those out in oct/nov

One to two years is traditional, but do what's best for you. You may want to do an article next year in your local paper, the same date, just a year before and announce your engagement. Thereafter, send your announcements and post a website.

Agree on waiting until it's closer. I got engaged in 2008, did pics in October 2010 (so they wouldn't be dreary winter pics) and put them on the STDs to sent out in January to be ready for our June wedding!

We're getting ours done in about two months or so and our wedding isn't until 11-2012. I think it makes sense to get them done shortly after your engagement. I mean, they are engagement photos. Honestly, there is really no set time though. You can do them whenever you want =)

We are doing our in July because we want to use FH motorcylce in ours and right now the weather here is very upnpredictable.

If you are doing STD's, then you need to have them done at least 6 months out. What you need to decide is if you want fall/spring/summer/winter type of photos. You are lucky that you have a ton of time to consider this. Personally, I would do them in the fall of this year or the spring of next.

You can get your engagement photos any time you want. I know of some people that have done them twice. once early on, and then the "official" photos.

We did ours last month because if we waited any longer it would be too dang hot here!

Just factor in:

* when you need them (for STDs, for example)

* what season you'd like to have as your setting

* when your photographer is available

Other factors aside, I prefer doing engagement photos closer to the engagement than to the wedding. That way the couple is still feeling the "newness" and isn't preoccupied with the details of the wedding plans.
