What's Your Strategy for Seating Arrangements?

Stephanie, on November 5, 2019 at 12:32 PM

I am trying to figure out if a seating arrangement is really necessary for the wedding reception. However, we will have 200 guests so I guess some type of organization is in order. Ladies, what strategy did you use when deciding and figuring out the seating?

I started by creating a chart in Word with the names at their table. Then, used that for invite list. Finally, I just had to remove names of those that RSVP’s “no”.

Mine ended up being pretty easy. I grouped family together, family friends together that knew each other, college friends together, there were only a few people that only knew a couple others so I tried to group them as much as possible. Good luck!

Veronica, that is awesome. I am sure my FH will help me. He has been hands on with EVERYTHING thus far except for bridesmaids dresses and my dress. He is really into the planning.i am shocked. I can't wait to discuss this with him this evening. Thanks so much.

I had it very easy since it was only 45 guest with 5 tables. I had:
    table 1: bride family (9)
    table 2: groom family (10)
    table 3: brides friends (10)
    table 4: groom friends (10)
    table 5: family friends (6)

On table 4 I had a couple from my side but we are all friends and know each other. Since I had a destination wedding and a welcome party the day before everyone knew each other by then so it was easy.

I suggest to group them. Family your side and his, friends your side and his, coworkers, and so on. If you have a lot of single people maybe put them in one table and so on.

I did all my moms family together and all my dads family together. Same from my FH as well!
Friends also together, the empty spaces or left over odd number of people I made sure they are people that will be chatty and someone who will talk to anyone so those people won’t feel awkward!

We assigned tables. When it was time to do it, we wrote people's names down on index cards (I would put 1 couple on each to cut down on the numbers) and then started grouping people by who they knew. Then, I would put those groups together by who we thought they would get along with until I had tables of 8-10. I bought some Avery place cards and printed them out at home. The escort cards were then on a table in alphabetical order right outside the reception room. I prefer the escort cards to the seating chart because last minute changes are a lot easier to deal with.

Assigned tables. I worked with immediate family closest to us, bridal party in the front closest to the dance floor, then remaining extended family and extra friends on the outskirts. Your VIPs should always be closest to you or have the best view of the dance floor. Our dance floor was in the center.
