What's with the groom arm bands?

FutureMrs., on April 23, 2011 at 12:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I was searching for wedding decor and a site had groom arm bands. Is it something just for decoration? Or does it serve a certain purpose? I just can't imagine it being "sexy" like the garter toss. But that's the only thing I can think of that it would be related to.

Here is what the site says about them:

"During the Middle Ages men would sometimes wear a garter or armband around their upper arm to signify their commitment to chivalry and their attachment to someone special. According to English folklore, King Arthur and his knights wore a garter armband to signify their brotherhood and shared destiny. Having all the men in your wedding party wear one of these armbands on your big day is a symbol of friendship that is centuries old!"

Sounds like just a marketing ploy to me.

Lol! Yeah kind of, huh? Although, as long as it's not something like the garter toss and I don't have to remove it with my teeth or anything, it sounds kind of cool! My man definitely has a commitment to chivalry! And me of course!

Well, I think you can safely decline to remove it with your teeth. ;-)

It kind of reminds me of Homecoming when girls wear giant mums, and guys wear the teeny tiny ones around their arms -- the man garter looks like a naked man mum to me!

Could also be a symbol of mourning (if black).

It looks like something from a costume... like an old saloon costume... I imagine it with suspenders!

I second what Nancy T said, people used to wear black arm bands to let people know they are in mourning and to go easy on them. You can see an example in "It's A Wonderful Life", George wears one on his left arm in the bank meeting after his father's death.
