What's the Difference Between A Wedding DJ and a Party DJ

Mrs V (Roe), on June 3, 2012 at 11:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi ladies FH and I were having a discussion today while leaving one of the venues we are taking a look at and the discussion came up about DJ's. He lovingly reminded me that we have a co-worker who has been DJing parties for about 20 years which prompted the debate of the difference between a wedding dj and a party dj. Can you ladies help me clarify this point for him. i'm going to show him the post so I'm not going to put what I think so he can see the truth of my words in your posts. Thanks ladies :-)

I have been to parties and weddings. The difference I have seen is a party DJ only has to keep the party going. A wedding DJ has to maintain the party atmosphere while following a schedule (entrance of the bride and groom, 1st dance, cutting cutting, etc)

Also, a wedding DJ costs more.

A wedding DJ knows how to be a Master of Ceremonies...i.e. emcee for the evening with the introductions of the wedding party, the toasts, introducing the First Dance, other dances, and keep the flow of the rest of the evening...cake cutting, bouquet toss, garter toss, etc. He also knows the best music to play during the dinner part of the reception vs. the party part of the reception.

A party DJ or club DJ may not have the same skill sets. I've seen receptions with an inexperienced wedding reception DJ....sadly to say, key moments of the evening were not directed well, the wedding party wasn't introduced, the guests were confused and never knew what was going on...and the absolute worst music was played during dinner (think very loud, deep beat dance music vs. music that would allow conversation during the meal). I've seen this several times...easy for me to pick out the experience of the DJ.

I had to look at where you were from before posting this simply because otherwise it would be fruitless so please don't think I'm a stalker. That being said, I am posting. link to the djs that my fiance and I are hoping to use for our wedding, she used to work with one of the guys which is how we found them. Their prices seem fair but the bigger thing is that they are all around djs who specialize in weddings. metroentertainmentdjs.com They are Michigan based

    Everything Stephanie said!!

They also have to be able to coordinate with your other vendors. For example, before the cake cutting song starts, they need to make sure you and the cake and the catering equipment are in place, and give the video/photo guys a heads up so they're ready to catch it on film.
